at the original prices they weren't a very good deal. the first 2 i got on "closeout" (how many closeouts do you get?) were $35 each. not a bad deal. this time i grabbed the green one and the smooth one. several of the smooth leather ones sold on ebay a while back for well above $50. nowhere near the $120 or whatever the original price was. even if you don't need them you should be able to resell them anc come out ahead, end up with one free at the least.

The Orvis case came today and it looks like just the ticket. The 26" bbls fit nice and snug ..... but NO latitude for anything longer. Good fit for the stock with a velcro retaining strap. Outside pocket with enough room for snap caps and trigger lock. Substantial brass hdwre. It has a leather supported canvas strap and leather handle. This fleece lined bag is made of heavy canvas with nice looking leather trim. At $169 plus tax and shipping it is not the economy alternative ..... but my minty BSS deserves it ..... Now, my 30" lefever F deserves a period leg o' mutton .....

Roger,

The cases I ordered came today from Cabella's. Even though the Bargain Cave indicated the calfskin case was the standard size, and not the long model, the cases are about 38" long and the tags on the package say that it is the long model. Even though I wanted the shorter case, the calfskin is quality leather, almost like thick belting leather, color is very nice and I think a great bargain at this price. I havn't tried them as yet, but is the center round pocket at the inside fold for the barrels without fore-end, even then it appears a little too small for even that, but I will try it later tonight. I see what you mean about the design somewhat, could have been a better layout, but at $40 I am very well pleased.

Just had a chance to put my SxS's into these cases and what I thought was a very small barrel pocket turned out not to be so. No problem at all with a .410, 28 and a 20 with splinter fore-ends. Don't have anything larger than a 20 in my sxs's.

i assume that's for the barrels. they don't work well anywhere else. i put a 20 ga model 12 i got for my father in one today to take to the range and it was just perfect. think will give him that case too. i've had 12 ga sxs's in that barrel pocket but were splinter f/e models. i think i did get a set of 12 ga o/u barrels and f/e in it once and it worked but was too fat on the outside. it'd work better to not have that pouch. doesn't need both. but the way it's stitched in you'd ruin the case to remove it.

guess the calfskin one i got will be the same way. at that length it should make a dandy auto-5 case at least.

glad you liked them. i always get nervous recommending stuff as not everyone sees things the same way.

I have the Boyt 28" soft case and its a great carry for my assorted 26" SXS's. Even the 28 inchers get to ride in it some times. Also, a good fit for my Dickson 25". I wouldn't give a second thought to purchase another. Randy

Dave, the 2 i ordered i finally picked up yesterday (free delivery to the nearest cabelas deal). the pockets on the inside of the ones you got - the longer, smooth leather version - are different from the short ones. i like it and can use it but just barely. i stuck my auto-5 magnum 20 in it and the barrel just barely fit in the pocket for it. i didn't try a 12 (or any double) but i don't see how a 12 anything could possibly fit. the buttstock pocket is better than the one on the short cases and the internal arrangement is better as the case stays nice and flat. and you don't reeeeeally need a pocket for both barrel and stock; the barrels can just lay in the case next to the hinge side and the stock is well protected anyway.

still, it's one of those things where they could have been outstanding if done only slightly differently. it's almost like someone knowing nothing about guns grabbed one gun and used it as the pattern to build the case around. they're not adaptable over a real wide range of stuff. i still like both types and can use them but they're sort of dedicated to specific guns.

Roger,

I wondered if you had gotten yours as yet and what you thought of the smooth leather style. When I filled mine I noted that the case remained pretty flat, which was opposite your first experience, and thought that your obsevation might have been because of the suede versions, as suede by nature is a very flexible leather, where the leather they used on the smooth versions is very thick and stiff with the way it was tanned.

I hadn't realized that there was a difference in the inside pocket arrangements on the two different sizes, interesting.

But I do agree that they could have thought out the inside arrangements much better. But if they had done so, they probably would have sold much better, and wouldn't have been available to us at the clearance pricing.

But as you said, the arrangement is workable though not ideal, and I think a really good value with clearance price considered.
