Brian, my dad was a Corporal in Germany during, and after the 2nd world war. He drove a halftrack. When the armistice was declared, he went on "occupation" in Czech, Austria, and finally Germany. While in Germany, with what little free time he had, he used to go out in the country and go deer hunting; as his platoon was short of meat. He and his fellow "GIs" would share their rations with DPs, (displaced persons) who were always starving. He told me about shooting a buck with what he thought was a standard full metal jacketed round out of his Springfield. Seems he chambered a tracer round by mistake. Achieving complete pentration, the tracer went on through the deer and into some tall dry grass, causing quite a brush fire. Soon a squad of fellow soldiers showed up to see what the firefight was all about! Caused quite a ruckus...........Said he didn't get but one steak from that deer, as everybody wanted a share for helping put out the fire before an Officer showed up.
Maybe you can find some limited hunting in Afganistan.... Grant.
