Who would be good at properly restoring a pre 64 Winchester model 70?

I have never had a Pre-64 Winchester that I thought would benefit from a restoration. A Pre-64 Model 70 should be preserved with all dings and wear intact. None of mine have ever been touched by a gunsmith for restoration purposes.

They're not worth restoring. I would buy new Ceska Zbrojovka repetier instead. Stronger steel and much superior scope mounting setup.

Man, you guys are rough!

Those Ceska's improved their wood quality yet? Least many I see here, would so benefit.

Bill's got a closet collection of old Parkers that conforms to his Model 70 definition of beauty. His pretty ones are for friends. The one's he really adores are the former.

I share Gunny's question in that I've got a super and old Model 54 here in 270 Winchester. Just about collector quality ( by my definition), but has bee drilled and tapped on the receiver for an old side mount. I'd like to find someone who could TIG it and restore the receiver's appearance as close as possible to factory.

Gunny,

Are trying to restore or "build" a custom rifle? I know you said restore and there are some folks that can do that, but if you are trying to customize with a new barrel and stock I would use some different folks.

For restorations you may want to check with these folks:

I was going to recomend John Kay of Winchester Restorations, as well. He refinished a Mod 70 stock for me, albeit with an oil finish, not the spar varnish Winchester used to use. I'm sure his metal finish work is equally high quality.

You'll probably wind up spending more than the gun would be worth on re-sale, but I know how that bug can bite you and, for whatever reason, you feel compelled to restore a gun. I say if it makes you happy, go for it.

Looks pro, just the thing to keep garden raiding jumbos at bay, or bruins out of your blueberry patch.
PS. Check out pic 4 the wood is about right quality w/o being gigolo style.

I would like to find someone to restore the original finish on the metal. There are not many shops that can do that without buggering up the metal.

Keep the pre-war rifles original, there are plenty of the other pre-64 M70s to play with.
No shortage here.
