Never used Behlens, but have used a lot of Deft's bar top finish, a brushing lacquer available I know in a satin and gloss. Years ago I knew one gunsmith that used it to seal and fill the grain of the wood before applying an oil on top.

I have personally used it to finish several stocks and find it easy to use and fast. After applying a couple of coats, fine sand or steel wool down to what looks like bare wood and reapply to fill and seal. Then apply a few more coats but sand/steel wool lightly between coats.
