In an earlier post I mentioned a Stevens 16 my son had purchased. In the process of burning up a lot of 16's this weekend, we noticed a crack/seperation across the rib about 2 inches from the breech. I assume this is where the rib was joined? There seems to be no loosness or anything comeing adrift. Forget it or worry about it? My Lefevers have an almost invisible line at about that point...

The only shotguns that I know a little bit about are L.C. Smiths. The extension rib was brazed not soldered and there is a line that you can see in most grades. The top and bottom ribs were soft soldered.
With the stress of this piece on most shotguns for a good solid lock-up I would hope that they also are brazed on also.

Chuck,
The common construction is as David mentioned above. The first couple inches from the breach are often a part of the lug as on a Parker, LC Smith, Fox, and many others. This is usually brazed on. The rib is then soldered on forward of this. If done correctly, it should butt up against the short "stub rib". On my Parker, I ensured it was soldered to it tightly. It shouldn't cause any problem if it isn't tight other than a potential leak path for water to get into in the rain.

And here I had always thought that the "gold" strip at the junction of the rib and rib extension on my L.C.Smiths was real gold and a decorative feature. I guess its just brass from brazing, but it sure shines like gold...Geo

On a Stevens forget about it and keep shooting the repair will cost more than the gun. It does not stop the function and should not be a safety concern IMHO

George,
The strip on some is real gold or silver. It's from that point to the end near the breech that is brazed.
