Drew; Sorta like that except was fully around on the side of bbl & didn't have the little piece missing where the hole is in that one. Have since had the walnut tree cut & sold for lumber & have no idea now where the tire went, so will likely not repeat the process. I do however wish I had loaded up some full 2 3/4" mags with 1½oz shot with a slow powder like Blue Dot & seen if I could have opened it back up. It sort of bugs me that I have left this defect virtually undectable to visual examination, but at least the stock itself makes the gun unshootable as is.

Thanks Jerry, for the info. I also have a 1900 Remington in 12ga, 30" Damascus, ejector. Between the two, which do you prefer? I like my Elsie, it's a little lighter.

I have several I shoot with light reloads, they do raise a few eyebrows when I go to the range though.

For me, here in west central Ohio, no one even looks at what I shoot. The agricultural climate of the area has virtually everyone having grown up with pump shotguns. For these people, they look at a SxS with curiosity and hardly even notice the composite barrels. I have one pump shotgun and virtually the rest are all composite barrels and I shoot them most often, both at shooting games and hunting. No one really pays any attention, just that I am the "nut" who likes old guns. Though, just last week a gentleman probably near 70, told me of his Dad's Damascus SxS, that blew out the side of the left barrel. We will never know why it happened though. Obstruction? very poor condition? way over loaded loads? I always felt that composite barrels got their bad rap, by the change in powders when nitro powders replaced BP powders. You simply cannot replace the powders with drams and not forget about dram equivelent. Plus the barrel manufactures who finally were able to build fluid barrels cheaper that were finally actually equal or better than the composite barrels. Composite barrels are labor intensive, in comparison, fluid barrels are not. Yet, we can sell the gun for the same amount of money for an increase in profit. What would you push as a better gun tool? A chance to sell everyone new guns and replace the customers old guns and the new guns that are cheaper to make, but sell for the same price?

I'm very close to acquiring a nice 16b Lefever H grade with twist barrels. I would have preferred chain damascus, but the rest of the gun is in great original shape, great wood, no cracks, original buttplate, etc., and I couldn't pass it up. I was just curious how many of you own similar guns and shoot them regularly.
I'm really looking forward to reloading low pressure loads for it, possibly even black powder. If anyone has any spare Federal Monarch purple 16ga paper hulls (or loaded shells) they don't need, or want to sell, let me know. Mark, Please forgive, as I should have responded directly to your post some time ago. Back in Dec 2006 we started talking about the none existence of 16ga paper hulls. We decided to do a group purchase and actually had about 60,000 hulls spoken for. Eventually, I spoke directly to Mike Graf. He agreed to offer them commercially on his site: http://www.grafs.com/product/185034Well, he is still selling them, so they must be a mover for him. If you need 16ga low pressure load info, check with these good people: http://wwww.16ga.comYou will enjoy the Lefever. Your next one will be G grade with chain damascus. Pete

Thank you Pete, I actually have already bought some of the paper hulls from Grafs, and I've belonged to the 16ga. society for a while now (a.k.a. UncleDanFan). I like the old Monarks though, because they are thicker and don't buckle as easily, and they look really cool with an old gun too :).
As for the G Lefever 16, I haven't found one under 7 lbs. yet (this H I'm getting is 6.5lbs), although I'm sure they're out there. Steve Barnett has a couple on his site now and they're both over 7lbs, which defeats the purpose of a 16 to me.
Cheers,
Mark
