What is accepted definition of On the Face?

Barrels perfectly fitted against breech faces?

Very slight gap at the top of the barrels and very slight gap between barrel flats and the water table? That is to allow barrels to fit perfectly after wearing in.

Snug fit between breech end of barrels and standing breech? I would say there should be no movement of the barrels while the forend is off.

I agree with Jagermeister.

The barrels will not move left and right on the action.

Best,

Mike

No gap between bbls and breech face - at all.

There should be a gap between bbls and water table, but not much of one. I don't think it should be all that visible.

And there should be no play in the bbls - but this can be separate from being off the face. It can be related to a worn bolt/bite relationship.

Bbls do not wear it. They wear out.

The wearing in story is just an excuse for poor workmanship.

OWD et al, with modern guns like BSS, 23's, etc. built of modern steels you are correct. Barrels should fit tightly against breech with no gap at the top.

Older guns it is good practise to see a very slight gap at the top of breech faces, also slight gap beneath flats at watertable as Cherry bomb describes. The hinge pin will inevitably wear and the barrels will then fit snugly at standing breech which is usually cut at 3-5 degree angle. Some may not want to hear it but wearing in or just plain wearing of older steel hook and hinge pin is a fact of life.
