1200 might be considered replacement insurance value... but I didnt see anyone ask for insurance value?? Still say $600 is a fair purchase/sale price for a field grade 30in mid 50s HD in 95% condition....

I thought that might be a Heavy Duck. That is the reason it is heavy the walk and hunt with. The barrel of the Heavy Duck is heavier than a standard Model 12 barrel and they have a lead weight in the butt stock. All that helped reduce the recoil when using 3" Magnum shells.

I agree that a 95% Heavy Duck is worth more than $600!

Can either of you tell me when the Sauer side by side was made?

The numbers on it are on the back of the trigger guard. I believe they are 136267. It is different.... not a lot of fancy scroll work or anything but, does have decorative areas around the screws, which themselves are kinda unique....not like the newer shotguns he had. I can see why my dad liked it... .

Patty:

If you take the barrels off of the Sauer and look on the barrel flats, there should be a number set up something like x/xx or xx/xx. It will be the month and year the gun was subjected to proof testing, which is about as close to manufacture date as you're likely to get.

Pattyd,
here is a site that is helpfull with German Guns and explains the date codes;

http://www.germanguns.com/technical.html

"The other set of numeric marks often found on both rifles and guns is the actual date code of proof. The style of these numbers can easily be confused with the gauge markings described above, so be aware that both possibilities exist. Typical date codes will be three or four digits signifying month and year, as in 513 for May, 1913, or 1127 for November of 1927. Sometimes there will be a dot or slash between the month and year, but most often they are just run together. Often the date code is above a line, with another number below the line. The number below the line is that gun's actual entry number in the proof house records for that month and year."

No need to restore them. All you need is cleaning rod with tips, patches, nitrile, vinyl, or latex gloves and can of G96 'Total Gun Treatment' spray. End of August is good time to start moving them out of your house. You can get a bit better price just before hunting season starts.
I just bought 1956 vintage 20ga Ithaca pump gun with 26" barrel. The gun is in virtualy unused condition. The biggest reason I bought it is #231120231 lightly entched on slide bar.
When I examined this gun in shop that # told me two things: the gun is pretty old , and the original owner is already dead. I'm goin' to continue hunting tradition by using this piece in sunflower fields to shoot doves.
Madam, you need to move on. Best Jagi

Thanks everyone for your expertise and advice. I am not sure that I will ever consider selling them.......maybe just pass them to the next generation.

Take care.

If there is anyone in your family interested at all, I would definately pass them on. Anything to keep a part of family history going.

Hello everyone.

I did pull the barrels on the JP Sauer and there are different little designs on the bottom of the barrel.... one looks like a puffy crown and a "W" and "U" with what looks like smaller crowns over them. And then....16/1 and a "16" in a circle. This is all back near where the barrels connect witht he stock on both sides.

And I did find the numbers 1 34... is this the manufacture date?

Wow!! The more I look at this gun the more I love it!! I can see why my dad liked it so much.

Thanks again, everyone.

Take care.

Patty
