Well...it's an age-old debate but are trap shooters really athlete's?

My opinion....unless you are exerting yourself physically, to extremes, you're not an athlete. This means the following people are not athletes:

Poker players
Trap shooters
Shuffle board players
Chess players
Fishermen

I'm not sure where baseball fits into it.

The Olympics is rooted in combat oriented activities. Shooting is a lot closer to the roots of the Olympics than many sports that require more physical exertion. Very few wars are won by soldiers who beat each other to death with tennis racquets or basketballs.

GregSY I think competitions that are decided by eyesight, eye-hand coordination, and reflexes qualify as sport. You won't get any argument out of me on poker and chess. I don't know this but I would think that the original Olympics had spear chukking and archery competitions.

Best,

Mike

On a sad note, Great Britain has no shooters competing that I am aware of. Who can shoot - who can practice shooting while England postures politically against the shooting sports?

There are plenty of clays broken in the UK still, a friend runs a clayshoot on a weekly basis and does very well at it.

The government just doesn't want to fund a team because of political correctness I'd imagine.

I never said it wasn't a sport, or a competition, but it's not practiced by athletes.

I'll offer my final proof - Rosie O'Donnel, with a little training on which end of the gun to hold, could presumably shoot trap. She couldn't run a 10K.

Some fishing is a sport and very hard work, poker is not.To me Trap is a sport, chess is not,Shuffle board wait till you hit seventy, computer games are not.Rosie may could shoot it but never shut it and one person squads with no puller suck in the long run. I can't run 1K but enjoy doing MMA.
We have made just about anything that takes skill a sport so all can be Jocks.

Well, the Greeks developed the Olympics and it is pretty simple to look up the definition of an athlete. Hmmmm.... comes from the Greeks... "to contend for a prize", "contest". At some point the committee decided that trap shooting fit's the bill. There is no doubt in my mind that the pig RO'D could compete in either event... and would do poorly in each case. Lots of people 'never finish' during the games.
My best wishes to all of the U.S.A athletes.
