No, Miller, my first thought was that the Marine story was probably apocryphal, one of those things going around. Secondly, I couldn't imagine anyone pushed into a closet at gunpoint worrying about his wallet. More likely within seconds of losing his life.
Fnb25: right on, "concur." I thought of it removing laterals in my vineyard today. Mistakes come easily to me in the middle of the night.

I figure for King to live to his age in the land he calls home and to have spent much of the time in the game lands he is tough enough for me.

One of the two times in my life that I used a firearm to turn around a violent attack, the police in my very liberal community had no problem with how I handled the situation, offered to assist me if legal problems arose. The other time, the police were not involved, but I would have expected the same result. As gentlemen of some intelligence, we are practiced at handling a "situation" to the best of our ability, education, and common sense and worrying about the consequences after we have done our duty.

In the Marine oath you swear to defend against terror in far off lands and domestic. Also once a Marine always a Marine.Your actions may be slower but you still move

Another story going around the internet: An older guy going to bed has his wife tell him he left the light on in their outside shed. He didn't remember being in the shed that day so he looked out the window and saw someone stealing his stuff, so he calls the police. Their reply: They were doing something more important and they couldn't get there in time to catch anyone, so they told him to lock his doors and stay in the house where it was safe. About two minutes later he calls the police back and told them to take their time because he had just stuck a gun out the window and shot one of the burglars. Then he hung up the phone. Within five minutes the police, an ambulance and fire trucks arrive and while running around to the back of the house, they run into the thieves, wrestle them to the ground and handcuff them. When the police asked the old guy where the burglar was that he had shot, he told them he hadn't shot anyone at all. They started screaming at him, "You told us you shot someone!!" His reply: "You told me you couldn't get here in time."

Eightbore's and Jimmy's posts above dovetail nicely with my thoughts about these things. The older guy was obviously " a gentleman of some intelligence and common sense," too.
