What era were springs inclused on the strikers on hammerguns with rebounding hammers? Or was it a gunmaker's personal preference? If a hammergun has a spring on the striker, has the -kx force factor been taken into account by the mainspring? It appears that the spent caps were to push the strikers back into battery. The longarm in question is a 10 bore H&H probably from 1875-1876(I haven't acquired any info), serial number 3737, with large strikers to prevent "dubbing". Sometimes when I attempt to quickly close the gun, the strikers protrude a little and I'm not keen of the idea of closing the gun bumping the caps w/ the strikers. I wanted to put a short spring on the strikers and wondered if it would be a problem. Then again, it may not matter.

I have been in your position.
The first thing to do is to remove the firing pins and clean out the whole mechanism.
If the nature of the pins means that they still tend to "stick" a bit while protruding, I have taken apart a ball point pen to add enough spring to just tend to keep the pins back.
My Blanch has pins similar to what you describe. I think their shape causes a kind of wedging action against their channels. While the rebounding hammers are kept well back of any contact, the tendency to protrude bothered me. A mere single curl of spring took care of the worry.
A few of the gunsmiths I would recommend have been in favor of this approach regardless of the age of the gun.

I've also employed the ballpoint pen spring remedy. Works fine.

Thanks for the suggestions.
It's clean and it's just that "thud" you hear, feel upon closing it. I was just wondering if hammerguns were originally equipped with springs and how much was too much. I have an ample supply of springs from the kits available at Brownells.

I have cleaned up a lot of Husqvarna hammerguns, Models 17, 20, 34, 48, 51, 52, 100, and 103, all of these have springs infront of the FP/striker. I just made firing pins/strikers for a Baker hammerless and it has springs in front of the firing pins. I have seen hammerless L.C. Smiths with and without them. The Baker has a stop screw to retain the FP/striker, the LC Smith doesn't. FWIW

"IF" a firing pin is properly shaped, does not have an overly long projection & moves freely in it's hole, a retraction spring should not really be a "Need". On a gun which originally had them, then they will be a necessity to prevent that over projection. On one which did not I would put pin correction at a much higher priority than an attempt to add them.

If you do decide to use them I've found the spring in a ballpoint pen works great.
