I see people buying a grilled cheese sandwich on ebay for $5000.00 because it has a burnt spot on it that resembles Jesus. But most people would rather not have the name down the side of the rib from what I have seen from the shows I have been to. Ask yourself, how many people would look at two Model 42s or Model 12s that were exactly identical, for the same exact price and pick the one with Simmons stamped down the rib? Not very many.

Most people at gun shows don't know what they're looking at. The Winchester rib business is not for those who have not studied it. You are right, it is easy to get stung with a gun that is an upgrade or a retrofit rib gun.

The 42 counterfeit/upgrade activity seems to have surpassed the 1911 counterfeit rate.

I must agree. The buyers of the Model 42 don't seem to be too concerned with getting a real gun.

I, too, want a M42 with a vent rib and nice wood. But now I'm thinking of leaving my plain barreled, full choked, 28", M42 alone and just buying a Brownchester or Winpan M42 instead.

Here's a better idea. Forget about the 42. .410 shells are too expensive and empties are hard to find to reload so it is a pretty useless gun anymore unless you just want something to collect. I never cared that much for them to begin with. I'd much rather grab my 20 gauge Ithaca Model 37 for a smaller game pump gun any day. Have for 45 years.

You're just being practical. This has nothing to do with practical.

Yup, he's an Ohio trapshooter and doesn't have the same wires as other shotgun guys. It's the same phenomenon that makes me use a 10 gauge for grouse. Plain ass dumbness. Like me, he's probably a nice guy, sometimes.
