Note the Luftwaffe drilling was chambered for the 9.3x74R as Dave said, not one of the 9mm rounds. The M54 was probably in the 9x57 chambering. A 9.3x74R is ballistically pushing very hard on the .375H&H & could not be re-chambered to a .35 Whelen as both its case & bore are already larger than the Whelen.

Darned if there isn't a Luftwaffe M30 Survival Drilling w/ case & accessories coming up in the September Rock Island Auction. I just got their flyer in the mail today.

Best Regards, George

I think there where only 2000 Luftwaffe Drillings made in 41 and 42.All in that 9.3X74R,I have heard it called the "Goring Caliber" and he was supposed to be quite a hunter who probably chose it for North Africa they where flying over.
I have seen a number come to market over the years and seem to be as good as light sweet black gold for a investment.

Yup-you are correct- I went to my Rule's Bible, yes- the .35 Whelen has to be a re-chambered 9x57-absolutely. I looked at a 1949 era M70 SuperGrade in .300 H&H Magnum last week-but it had been rechambered to .300 Weatherby Magnum (unknown to me or the seller who did it- but it was restamped on the barrel) and I went to my copy of the Grits and Tom Gresham book on Weatherby- he started rechambering BA rifles in .308 nom. bore to his "wildcat" .300 Magnum in the 1940's!If that SuperGrade was a .375 H&H Magnum I'd like to own it, but shell prices over the improved loads nowadays for the 30-06, and the better pricing on 30-06 ammo tell me- stick with what you can shoot well-RWTF

In 1941 Drilling Models 28 & 30 made up 80% of Sauers longarm sales. There were 4k Model 30 Drillings ordered for the Reichs Luft Ministerium and I've seen 2 different totals on the delivery number: 2456(Suhl Archives) & 2477 out of 4000. As far as just being delivered, in 1941 there were 766, 1942 there were 1621 and in 1943 there were 69 pieces delivered. And there were some floating around for the Police School for Technology and Commerce. A higher density can be found in the 334,600 to 339,000 but the serial number range begins somewhere along 332,806(01/1941) and continues thru 339,608(08/1942) with a Model 30 Drilling at serial number 344,023 w/ scope and an engraved swastika on the left tube(1944??). The case had the Sauer 'ce' code on it and fully filled weighed 32 pounds. Included were 2 boxes of 10 rounds of 9.3X74R H-Mantel, 10 12 bore Brenneke slug rounds and 50 rounds of Rottweil 65mm 12 bore shotshells w/ 3.5mm diameter shot. The total length of the Model 30 was 42 inches and it weighed 7.5 pounds. The Krupp tubes were 650mm with the right being 1/2 choke and the left cylinder(I believe). I've heard Mr. M.V. Highsmith several times say that after the war a complete set could be acquired for $100 or so, which he had 2 I believe. When I inquired more, he would say: "What would I want with a Kraut gun, anyway?"

Kind Regards,

Raimey

The Nazi drilling caliber is 9.3X74, nothing like the 9MM for which the Model 54 was chambered.
