I read this board several times a day but rarely post. As a consequence, I am not always up to speed on the tools at our disposal. In searching for something a couple of weeks ago I happened to run across the instructions for how to “ignore” users on this board. This was found none too soon, as I was on the verge of blowing a gasket.

It seems that one user posts in the majority of threads and is negative and purposefully argumentative 95+% of the time. I honestly believe that his sole purpose for logging on each day is to piss off as many members as possible. In reading the responses he generates in the majority of threads on this board, I would say that mission is a resounding success. He was getting on my nerves to the point that I did not buy a shotgun he had in the For Sale section a couple of weeks ago. I just could not bear the thought of sending him a dime. I did notice that the gun went for a fair amount below market value and imagine many others felt the same as me.

At any rate, the threads look much nicer now when I see “you are ignoring this user” in the text box beside his screen name. I still see others reply to him in angry and frustrated tones every day and thought I would give a brief tutorial on how to ignore people. This is what you do:

1. open a thread where the user has posted
2. left click on the user’s name
3. click “view profile”
4. click “ignore this user”
5. watch your blood pressure instantly go down

It as simple as that. If I can figure out how to do it on a computer, just about anybody can figure it out.

Every single day I read folks’ replies to this bozo and it is apparent that he is reducing the enjoyment they get from reading this board. If you start ignoring him, then I think you will find your stress level go down and enjoyment level go up.

As an added bonus, maybe he will stop logging onto this BBS if enough people stop replying to his intentionally inflammatory posts. And even if he is still around trying to stir up trouble, you will not see what is he is writing, so who cares? Either way, you win!

Marc,
You are absolutely correct about increasing the enjoyment of this board. Like you, I read several times a day but rarely post. I applied the ignore feature to a select few several months ago and don't miss them a bit. Not an iota.

Marc, Regardless of how one particular poster does (or does not) affect a BB I think it's far worse to start up some sort of vendetta against someone.

Besides, without the occasional inflammatory posts this board might become one of the dullest places on the web. There's nothing more boring than a bunch of people sitting around focused on being pleasant to one another.

Right on MS.
You've hit the nail right on the head.
I invoked that utility some time ago on two characters.
Seems one of them has already "contributed" his $0.02 already, but I deliberately can't see his "contribution".
MS - good post and very informative - the way this board USED TO BE.

It worked! Were you surprised that he was the first to reply to your very useful post?
Thank you,

Greg-

I sure do hope I di dnot come across as trying to start a vendetta. My intentions were the exact opposite. I am sure not the most computer literate guy around and when I stumbled across the "ignore" feature the other day it was a God-send.

The problem I was having was that the terrible bickering was mixed in with some very good information. I would stop reading threads only to later learn that I had cheated myself out learning something new. In reading others' posts I have the impression that I am not alone.

I swear, all I was trying to do was to alert others that this board has some useful features that can give folks more pleasure and knowledge. My post was prompted when I read a thread and saw THE VERY LAST GUY I figured would get upset, become upset do to one person's foolishness. I felt his pain and was trying to pass on a tool to help folks on the board.

edited to add-I am sure I will sound like an old fogey, but I too long for the good ol' days when this was a pretty civilized board. Old doubles seem to attract a certain type of crowd, and I have found them to by and large be of the civil sort, regardless of their social standing.

I got in a piss fight on another BBS onetime and it wasn't the same for me after the fight and I pretty well quit posting there and made this my "home" board.

EightBore gave Robert Chambers some advice that I have since tried to follow. As I remember it he said when someone deliberatley provoked to just ignore the provocation and not respond in anyway. When I followed this advice it has come out very well for me.

Besides; "Be happy, don't worry."

Best,

Mike

I never knew that feature was available. I likely will make some small use of it, thank you. I am pleased that the vast majority of posters here are not attempting simple provocation, and that majority is sufficient to keep this bbs at the top of those relatively few available to shooters and collectors of fine doubleguns.

Why Joe, how could you ever imagine he was talking about you?

My guess is if you thought that first thing then you know you're being a jackass on purpose.

I'll head over to your profile right now and hit that magic button.
