I remember this discussion. You were close, shinbone, in your original post when you thought they were to keep the gun from firing upside down in your original post. It makes one wonder that since it is not a feature on all 101s, what specifically made the factory decide which guns needed them while others did not? Were they test fired and found they needed the extra part? Or how else could they tell to put the part on the gun?

My guess was that someone managed to shoot himself in the foot (those shoe protectors to stop the muzzles marking your Hush Puppies always worried me) and sued the gunmakers.

Their lawyers may have advised that they should incorporate an additional safety mechanism ( with a warning in the owners manual recommending not using the gun to shoot man-eaters from trees)

It's like that guy at the turkey shoot. He was standing and waiting to shoot while he was resting on his gun with the barrel sitting over his big toe. Some guy went by and asked if his gun was loaded. "Yep!" Don't you know that you could shoot your toe off resting it like that? "Nope. Won't never happen." What do you mean it won't happen? If that gun goes off you could lose your toe! "Nope! Already done that!"
