I'll say...I need to just send him my gun.

CJ I took it off....I drilled it like you did in the picture. I've scribed it all the way around underneath for a reference mark to grind the sides down just a little.
I've got some beautiful African Eland leather a buddy of mine killed I'd like to use it but it's .070 thick...Should I get some thinner pig skin ?

How about the stretch

Do you wet it and stitch it on the back ?...Is contact cement a good glue to use ?..do you just glue the tucked edge ?

Wow, CJ. That really looks nice. How do you get such thick leather to press down without it being wrinkled between the pad and the stock? I have a hard time getting even the thinnest leather that flat.

With pig skin or goat skin you start to wrap the leather around and make a whole bunch of small pie shaped cuts in the leather. These will look like a row of shark teeth when you glue them down on to the back. To get these "teeth" down flat I put a length of packing tape(the smooth clear kind) against the edge of the counter top in the kitchen. I glue the teeth shaped cuts and slowly move the pad while pushing it into the counter top. This pulls as well as holds the pad "teeth" down. When dry you can sand the teeth on the pack against something flat. I use 400 grit paper and rotate the pad. I push it forward and then turn it around and push the bottom first. This gets the leather flat and makes for a nicer transition to the wood.

At this point I use a tool I made to incise the two lines in the leather. I don't know what these lines are called but they do add to the finished pad. Then it's leather dye and a polish.

I have used Cordivan and Cordivan and Red in a 50,50 mix.

Regards, Gordon

Thanks for all the help....Maybe next year I'll get the stock redone and a new pad fitted by a professional.

"H/Joe...Excellent Job!!.Using Smooth Cow/Goat/ or Panda Skin,is quite a Pain' You will notice on the 'Top-Side of your butt you can still see Mr Pachmayer's Logo. I always remove the names that are moulded into the pad.The 'Textured Leathers', Pig/ Manta Ray/"Cape Buffalo sctotums(scrota, if your a stickler for Latinate grammer)But, the Greatest Challenge, at least to me, and I have tried several times, African Elephant Ear! I was given several pieces 20yrs ago, beautifuly tanned, quite soft.A friend of Marvin Huey's sent it to me, but it beat me to get around a Recoil-Pad...He did the Bolt Rifle that year, that was the Raffle Prize at the Safari Show.(I think!)I made some Knife Sheaths, tough stuff to work. The L Covered Pads in the photo from "OUR"Book,All on Holland&Holland's the 3 on the left were from DB Rifles,Colour Natural, the pair of 12b. were Cordovan coloured. CJO'has mastered the thicker Leather on his Pads. See his Photos. cc/dt
