Back from the Prince George County skeet and trap range yesterday. Did a round of sporting clays with my 10 gauge Darne using gaugemate golds to reduce to 12 gauge.
Tried to use a very old case of gamebore 2-1/2" 12 gauge #7-1/2. The brass head was bulging and the right barrel would not extract. Decided that was unsafe(!) and went back to Win AA 1 oz loads. No problem. Not sure if the gamebore was just a bit small at the head, or if the powder had become too hot with age. Yes, the split in the inserts risks to damage the plastic or paper hulls, especially with larger shot and slightly faster loads. Considering the cost of 10 gauge shells, I'm willing to lose the prospect of reloading a few 12 gauge hulls.
On chamber wear, recall that you must lightly lubricate the inserts. Key is not to lubricate the gaugemate inserts too much. I've overlubricated, and had the Darne pull the inserts out and drop them in the Namibian sands (shooting pigeon and sand grouse). Ends a shoot that.
Regards

The guy at Siminole said the Remington Gun clubs should work okay...I'll let you know tomorrow. Remington Gun Clubs stick in the inserts.

In reading your posts I was curious about them. Wanted to shoot a 10 ga I'm getting and so the 10 ga to 12 ga. is great. I saw that Cabela's has them, went over there, only 4 miles away, and looked at the information on the package. Interesting, they list on the instructions that the guage adapter and the shell will eject from shotgun together. Also use Win. AA / Rem. STS for best results. This is for the Silver.

Steve, I wasn't referring to anything you said, that's what was written on the packaging. It stated safe to use in break open actions, and then the last sentence talks about might not eject in some automatics.

Greg, Have you given any thought to buying a 20 bore? Steve Yes that would seem to be the obvious answer. However, classic 20 bores are rather more uncommon over here, and I cannot bring myself to buy something "modern". Also, the sub bore rules are reviewed every year, and could change at any time. That said, should a nice old 20 gauge turn up at the right price I would be a contender. GDU

Now tell me I should just go and buy a 20 bore!
Actually Greg I was just doing as you requested LOL. JDW, No problem, I wasn't upset or anything, I just put that in because I was very careful to say extractors in my response, knowing that ejectors would give very different (and not as good) results. With extractors the Gaugemates stay in the chambers and you don't have to be picking them up off the ground for reuse like you would with ejectors. Steve
