Here's my first attempt at leather covering a recoil pad....next time around I'll under size the pad and use thinner leather. Looks nicer than the nasty Pachmayr someone added years back. (the piece on the bottom is some rubberized non-skid tape.
The gun is a nine pin sidelock 2 &3/4" Scott (1925) choked .035 in both barrels.

The imaginary line is a piece of rubberized non-skid tape about an inch wide...I use it on the butts of all my guns.
The leather is one piece tucked under the pad.

I did it per my gunsmith buddies over the phone instruction.
I sliced a couple of slits in the bottom so I could screw it on... next time around I may permanantly mount it.

It doesn't look bad for a first attempt. It looks like the stock is curved. I find it works better for me if the end of the stock is straight. I wouldn't undercut the pad either. If you pull it real tight, the pad should fit pretty good and the leather doesn't stick out if you use thin leather. I like the color. I can't see how it is mounted.

The stock is curved the Pachmyer fit really good...The deer hide was just too thick.

I wet it real good stretched and sewed it over the pad. After it dried I dyed the leather Mahogany color and sealed it then I cut it loose and trimmed it down to where it lapped under the pad about an 1/8" then glued the 1/8" edge to the underside of the pad.

jOe, That's a project I'd like to try. I recently read a very good description of the process in "Shotgun Technicana" by Michael McIntosh and David Trevallion. They devote a whole chapter to this topic and the rest of the book has a ton of useful info. You forgot to tell us what make of gun that is.

jOe.....you did better than most(including me) for a first try.

That being said, I appreciate your candor.....would seem you might have some negative things to say about PURCHASING that level of workmanship on others guns?

For now, it is yours....and I trust if it ever departs your stable it will be done proper or represented as otherwise.

You are off to a good start. I have saved somwhere on the HD a very good tutorial on doing a LCBP.....end of stock was actually hogged out to stabilise the pad.

Seemed quite the simple and very well executed method.

I use a brad point bit 1/2 inch and drill a hole where the screw slits are. I drill down to the base and cover the pad with pig skin and then cut slits in the hole to make pie shaped points that are then glued to the inside of the hole. I buy "O" sized rubber stoppers that I shape and round and then cover them with leather as well. That way you can screw the pad to the stock and have the holes covered as well.
