"Other fine guns" and "Related items" should be allowed as an enhancement to the site, IMHO.

Well said A.W.-I'm gonna look for the "silver lining in the dark cloud" here- at heart- we are ALL so passionate about our doubles- whether a London Best or a LeFever Durston Special-and at 50 (or a few clicks above in my case) we have formed opinions that maybe we didn't have at 16- or 24. Lotsa spirited discussion is like condiments and seasoning to a skilled chef- too much- food is ruined- too little- not enough zest. But let's be gentlemen here- as the late Paul A. Curtis said so well "The Field Is The Touchstone of the Man"-!!

1) Put your direct email address (as well as phone number if you so wish) into the ad and state that contact by these methods will definitely be answered. (By implication - using other methods of contact may not receive answers)
2) Ignore posts intended to just irritate.
3) Share usefull information received from direct contact if you so wish.
4) Ignore irritating posters.

Leave it alone - some of Y'all need to toughen up.

I personally like it the way it is. I need a cylinder for a Smith&Wesson .22-.32 Hand Ejector but have refrained from posting a WTB ad here even though the folks here obviously enjoy all manner of firearms and someone may have one. This is after all a Double Gun site with the exception of Drillings and Vierlings. I can't join the Smith&Wesson forum because of some weird anal retentive rule prohibiting joining with certain E-mail addresses. Both my AOL and Yahoo e-mail accounts are disallowed. I have read some of the posts there, and when someone dissents, the site administrator goes on a spastic rant like a dictator of a backwater African nation. This site is great. Very educational and informative with many knowledgable and helpful people. Occasionally good for a laugh too. Kind of like my 50ish shooting and hunting buddies who can go from cognac and cigars in a tux to poker and beer and "pull my finger" and practical jokes at deer camp. Please Dave, don't change a thing.

DRM has the perfect solution. If you want to eliminate the pain in the butt of answering PMs, post your phone number and/or real email address. An idiot who knows your contact information and still asks silly questions on the thread deserves to be ignored and that's what I would do. If the question serves all readers, OK, post it. However, the seller may not bother to answer if he has posted contact information. Leave it the way it is and toughen up to replies by idiots. As far as TTT, an occasional reminder that an item is still available is harmless, in my opinion. However, maybe meaningless blabber on the for sale section could be minimized as a matter of courtesy.

I have no problems with legitimate questions about a for sale item. Negotiations ought to take place off line, between prospective buyer and seller. Other than specific questions about the item posted for sale, I'd say no other posts. Why not just make that clear in the "for sale" guidelines, then delete inappropriate posts? And if someone persists with the inappropriate posts, then terminate them--with extreme prejudice.
But I also like giving the original poster a choice, if that's possible. In some cases--like Marc's recent "looking to buy a light double" post--he's clearly looking for advice. Which he got, and which appears to have worked out well both for him and Dave.
