OK, here is the scenario... You are being sent to an island indefinately - but it isn't just any island - it's a wingshooters paradise! The eastern side of the island is perfect grouse cover - twisted and thick. The northern shores of the island sway with miles of native prairie grasses holding countless pheasants. To the west, the pot holes and marshes are swarming with waterfowl. Finally, down south the cover produces a constant symphany of "bob-white" calls. So here is my question... before you leave for this wingshooters paradise, what gun do you take? Is it a 12, 16 or 20 bore? No semi-autos or pumps allowed - so would it be a stack barrel or side-by-side? Straight stock or a pistol grip variation? Being that this gun, your trusty bird dog and a limitless supply of shells will be your only posessions, will it be adored with knock out wood or functional and reliable straight grain? It doesn't need to be something currently produced - remember this is in your dreams, so describe it?

My Sterlingworth 12 ga 28" barrelled double with two triggers, extractors and chocked modified and full. If I had to cut back to one double this would be it. Jim

Drilling would be nice - but all the game is feathered. Not much left for the table if you go with the "other" barrel.

The strongest worry free twelve I can find. Will need a few boxes of slugs thrown in on the deal.Never know what other type of critter might just swim out to the island.

You give us all the easy ones. Just too easy - my Browning 325 Sporting Clays version - 12GA 30", screw chokes. It's my "go to" shotgun when I want to make a respectable score. It handles well (for me), is built like a tank, and since I can't have a maintenance kit with me on your island, I have no real longevity worries.

My 16 gauge NID, standard fair for a field grade, splinter, pistol grip 28 inch barrels full and modified, but none of this is important as worry free mechanical troubles. It never breaks!!!

A 20g hands down. Since there was no stated requirement that this was sustanance shooting, I take it is all for my pleasure. It would please me more to take a 6 lb 20g and shoot all these birds even if I took less birds, I'd be so happy with all the hunting, the number of kills would not be a priority...at all.
So, before all of you 12g guys jump on me, remember back and think if you are among those that have said 'I don't need to kill birds to enjoy myself hunting'. I know I never said that. I go hunting to kill birds. It doesn't have to be a lot, but some birds are required. Otherwise it's just hiking to me.

It would be my latest acquired Husqvarna hammer double, perhaps in more modern manufacture -- 16X65 (16X70 if modern), 85 cm barrels, one full, one cylinder. I would also want a nice supply of 16 gauge round balls fitted to the cylinder bore for the possibility of something other than feathered critters.

The question distills to the gun that brings me the most enjoyment afield. Disallowed or no, if its my dream I'll pay someone to smuggle in a Model 42 prewar field grade, probably modified, along with several lifetime supplies of Rem 3" #7.5 and #6.
And there'll be no non-tox in my dream - and no three-shot plug.
