I have not checked for a a couple of years but the cheap EAR yellow plugs had the best NRR rating. I believe the rateing system is an OSHA thing.

I use Dillon's for shooting clays and they seem okay except I have to remove the metal piece on my ball cap or it causes the headset to slide. I also use them when I hunt as they pick up noises that I can not hear with my ears a vast improvement.
The price is reasonable.

Have used the Peltor low profile muffs for years and years. I can still hear a mouse break wind, at 40 yds on a still morning!!
Many of my shooting buddies cannot. They do work.--TOOL MAN

Some guys can and do shoot well with a hunk of plastic over each ear and a spring steel clip smashing their ears together. The same folks will harp endlessly about gun fit, balance, and weight.

Personally, I can't hit jack squat with a C-clamp on my head.

Foam plugs for me, please. I just steal them from work....

From everything I've heard or read, foam plugs are more efficient than anything else, if you use them right. Unfortunately, most people don't use them right, which explains why one of the posts above said that custom molded plugs are better.

Depending on the size and shape of your head, it may not be possible to wear muffs with a cap or hat. Some can, some can't.

I can't, because my cap comes so far down on my head that the ear cups lap over it. Even when I position the muffs as low on my ears as possible, the top of the cup rides over the edge of the cap, holding it away from my head, resulting in poor noise control. If I try to wear my hat higher, the band of the muffs may keep the cap from falling off, but it is uncomfortable and hard to adjust. A hat with a full brim all the way around is impossible, even with muffs that have the band around the back of the neck. The brim comes almost down to the top of my ears. Somebody whose head has a higher crown wouldn't have that problem.

I have used foam plugs and molded plugs, but I can't stand the feeling of being so totally deaf that I am isolated from the world. I used to pull them out a little so I could hear something, then I didn't get good protection.

The solution for me was ESP electronic ear plugs. I've been using them for years. They work great - I can hear normal conversations, but I get good protection. They are dependable, but I have had them so many years that I naturally have needed service, and I have found Jack Homa's (ESP's) customer support to be excellent.

I have always used the older analog type, and never saw any need for the more expensive digital model.

Another problem with muffs is, they are so hot that it is virtually impossible to use them on a hot humid summer day in the South.

Hadn't had any problems except dead batteries in the Peltor TAC 6s which I have had for several years. The ear cups are reversible on the yoke to place the cutout or scallop in the cup downward where interference with the comb might take place but I don't recall hitting them with the comb. If you have low-mounted ears, I suppose you would. The white noise from steady wind takes some getting used to. I'm still laughing at the picture of Shotgun with his C-clamp. What I like best about the Peltor muffs is that they are so much better than the Remington model I had previously in terms of sound transmission (words such as pull, mark, harrr, aaayah, and now have a lot of importance in a certain context). I'd like to have that ear-channel chingus but will have to wait til I have the golf cart and my own five-acre sporting setup--in other words, forever.

The Peltor is often found deeply discounted.

Jim the ESP Elite are the same ones I bought for $400 made by 'Starkey' seems to be a great mark up going on. I could've bought the digital model for about $1100, the doctor told me they weren't needed unless you had a substantial hearing loss. I think if you'll do some checking you'll find that Starkey makes just about all of them.

Mine are Starkey Magnum Ears. Love 'em. For rifle or pistol work, just turn off the amplifiers. Best hunting money I ever spent.
