I was most interested on the recent posts about Victor Sarasqueta side lock guns. I have 2 in the safe, one is a 20ga made in 1947, the other is a 12ga made in 1952.

The 20 is a fairly high grade gun with nicely jeweled locks. It is engraved with a rose and scroll pattern similar to a Purdey and has 2 wedges of engraving on each barrel. The stock is a straight grip with a checkered butt, kind of plain considering the rest of the gun. It has had a hard life and has been attacked by an idiot with a big screwdriver, it is a work in progress.

The 12 I think is a 7E or 8E, it has full coverage deep open scroll, straight grip and has had a pad added, splinter f/e. It has much better wood than the 20ga with quite a bit of cast-off. The stock was in several pieces when I got it, but is slowly coming back together.

Anybody with an idea of the grades?

20ga;

12ga

Wonderful pictures. Do you know the model number for the second Sarasqueta. I'll bet you enjoy those two every time your bring them out of the safe.

Very interesting pictures of the inside of the locks! That is the first set of Spanish locks I have ever seen in which the bridle has been sculpted (metal removed). Usually you only see that on the best British guns, and I did not think that Basque lock makers were interested in doing that kind of work. In general, the Basque lock makers tend to be overly pragmatic.

Does anyone know if high end Spanish manufactures such as Arizabalaga, Grulla, Garbi, AyA, or Arrieta made guns with sculpted bridles in the locks?

jbauer, based upon previous posts concerning VS I am guessing it is a 7 or 8. I could be wrong. The 20 is similar to a grade 12 that was in a Gun Digest from the 1960s era.

David, to really confuse you the 12ga has the same bridle as the 20 and is jeweled, but not as fine as the 20ga. We probably have to remember that in the 40s and 50s that Victor Sarasqueta was the largest maker in Spain and had the best reputation as a quality maker.

I'm guessing that the first gun is not a VS model 12. I would bet it is more in the Model 10 range, based on what I have seen. It is higher than an 8E.

I am interested in the second gun, because it resembles a 16 gauge VS I chased and didn't capture. It also resembles a VS 20 bore gun that was for sale at Ivory Beads in Calif. last year.

I've yet to figure out the model on those guns except they are a Holland knock off...

I really like that gun.

Best,
Jim

Jim, you are probably right about the 20 being a grade 10. There is a 20 stamped at the front end of the lock plate with an X above it, I just never connected it with the grade. The 12ga also has something stamped there but is illegible. Interesting also is the # stamped in front of the hammers on both guns, it is a 4 digit # that has nothing to do with the serial #. It is repeated on the gun in several places, must be a job # or such. Another thing I noticed is that both guns serial # is prefixed with AM ???

I have a Victor Sarasqueta catalogue, circa, 1970. The first gun is the model 8, the second is a model 7. Sellng price at that time was $1092 for the model 8 and $750 approx; for the model 7.
I owned and used a model 7 in 20g.for many years. Victor Sarasqueta had a long and distinguished history, with several gold medal, exhibition awards dating back to 1897. I also understand that at one time he held a royal warrant as the gun maker to the king of Spain

7750 approx for the model 7

I am pleased to be corrected. Here is a photo of a recently sold VS 8E.
