Had a couple of cases of Winchester 16ga shells delivered today. They are for a old SXS, 2 1/2 dram-1oz-#8s. Low power stuff.

Boxes are labeled Winchester Super-X............

And they were made in Australia?

I'm not surprised that shotgun shells are made in Australia but it struck me as odd that they would make Winchester Super-X there for importation back to the US............?

Where did you find Winchesters in 16 ga. I thought they were discontinued. Maybe that is why they came from Australia.

Those are not low pressure shells, if that's what you seek.

Winchester 16's....

Funny, but all the years the old, smooth, 8 pt AA type hull was being factory loaded, and you could buy the WWAA16 wad to reload them, I rarely saw the wad used in factory loads. The 3 on the left are from the early 1990's and the heads are brass. The first 2 are the AA hull loaded with 1 ounce for squirrels and 1 1/8 ounce for pheasants. The high brass one, though a 6pt, seems to be made of the same slick plastic.

When the AA-type first disappeared, it was replaced with hulls having zinc-plated steel heads and thin, flimsy plastic but still with the old Mark V carboard and plastic wrapper technology. I have to say I really disliked those old confetti factories.

Strangely, it wasn't until after the blue wad disappeared as a reloading component that I first witnessed it in factory promo ammo. It's almost as though they stopped making them and, rather than sell them to reloaders, shipped their remaining inventory to Italy where they were loaded with a ball powder (very Winchester in appearance). The Italian flavor was very short-lived and superceded by the Australian flavor with a Gualandi wad and flake powder (very Hodgdon in appearance). Though brass-colored, those case heads are steel.

IMO, the current factory load is the best 1 ouncer Winchester ever produced and the hulls are as reloadable as anything out there, meaning they're good for 3-4 times before I toss them.

A lot of cartridges are made at the Geelong plant, and a lot of it is for export.
It doesn't surprise me a bit that some of it is making its way into the US.

They cost me $8 a box plus tax. Got them from Big Rock Sports out of North Carolina.

I may be ignorant but a 2 1/2 dram load pushing 1 ounce of shot can't be all that potent can it?

Holding one up to a light I can see a one piece wad/shot-cup and the powder appears to be flake. Has a 6 point crimp. Scrapping the metal head seems to reveal that it is brass as I see no steel under a brass wash?

It may be brass. I had some that were, several years ago. Try a magnet.

Dram Eq, and payload tell you nothing of the pressure the shell is loaded to.

You mentioned 'Old SxS' and that got me to wondering if you are assuming (wrongly) that these are low pressure shells.

They are loaded to SAAMI specs, which is all the manufacturer claims. They may or may not be suitable for the 'Old SxS'.

Do your homework first, and if your particular gun requires a lower pressure shell they are available from several sources.

Be safe.

Gun is a F. Dumoulin made in the 50's. Has nitro proof marks and seems to have plenty of metal.

I have not fired it yet though.....................

Winnie must have had plant there or some special arrangement. I used to use Winchester black boxed .22 cal high quality rounds from there. You may also find older 12ga Winchester paper upland loads that were made in Italy.

Here in the U.K., if I buy Winchester ammo the shotgun stuff is made in Italy and the .22 rf. stuff is Australian. The centrefire stuff is American. Lagopus.....
