Looks like the safety is missing as well. With all the missing parts and butchery, it doesn't even look like a good parts gun, let alone a fixer-upper. $897 start price will not get many if any bites, IMO.

It is a shame. The lugs on the barrel indicate a gun from the 1914/1916 era, very early. SBTs usually do not have a safety so that's a puzzle. The frame shows the early engraving but that's about all one can say.

There's a slot in the tang alright; when exactly did Flues SBTs have safeties? Considering you're getting about half a gun and probably a bad barrel, price should be--probably nothing. You can find a nice tight one with some color on the sides for about 1200$ least I did and no razeed stocks or other "generational" stock mods. Buy like I did from a rifle/pistol dealer; they don't appreciate them and sometimes don't over-appraise.

Is the donut post rib original?
If it were free, I'd give some thought to making a .410 "over-the-top" trap gun for a fun .410 trapshoot I do.

Looks like a Simmons rib to me, maybe the whole barrel is Simmons. I don't know what the rib posts are supposed to look like on an early 4E, but at one time, if I remember correctly, Simmons offered barrel replacement on Ithaca singles. A couple more hundred bucks and you could have a worn Knick with original parts.
