The 12E was not the top of the line Victor Sarasqueta. It was the Woodward action O/U Model 14 and I think only 7 were ever made and William Larkin Moore has four of them. Very rare pricey and made as a bespoke

You're comparing apples and oranges. The model 12E WAS the top of the line side-by-side shotgun. In 1960 the model 12 listed at $178USD, the model 13(double rifle) at $221USD, and the model 14(over/under) at $288USD. So while the O/U was the most expensive, it really wasn't very pricey and two of the catalogues in my possession, dated 1952, and 1960, show the model 14 as being a stock item, not special-order.

Hi all, well the seller sent the VS off to me last Thursday. So far so good on this.

I do have one nagging thought, the seller says that it is a 12E, but all the pics I've seen (just a couple mind you) show the 12E with very lavish game scene engraving on both the action and bbls (like the Cabelas gun). The gun I'm getting has a more simple scroll design. I'm just wondering if this could be a lower model and not a 12E.

So...any thoughts or anyone seen a model 12 without a game scene?

All the best!!

Greg

P.S. Ron I sent you a PM regading this.

gjw,

The Model 12E pictured in my catalogue has 100% coverage, deeply chiseled, heavy, silver scroll, against a black background. There is a small vignette of a game scene on each lock plate and on each barrel panel, surrounded by this scroll work. The game scenes, on the 12's that I have seen, are inlaid in heavy gold.

One of my best friends, who lives in Rhode Island, has a VS model 12E, in as-new condition, two-barrel-set, with wood that would bring tears to your eyes, in a factory-fitted case. It is exactly as I have decribed as far as engraving goes. I have a scanner here beside me. Will scan the relevant page from this catalogue but I have never mastered the trick of posting photos. I can build a double rifle but I can't do this seemingly simple job. I guess it comes with the "golden years". I could e-mail the scanned picture to someone for posting here, if there is a volunteer for the job.

Hi Ron, thats ok, don't worry about it. Thanks however, I do appreicate the kind effort. This kind of confirms my thinking about this gun. I suspect it is a lower grade, more than likely a Model 6 or 7. The scroll work is at 100% with scrolling on the bbls. To me when I saw it it just seemed, well shall we say too "plain" to be a top of the line model. Unless the gun is marked "Model 12" than I really think it is a lower grade.

I sent you some pics to your e-mail in your profile. Maybe you could be so kind as to see what model you come up with.

Either way, for $900 I still think I did ok on this.

Thanks again!! I do appreciate your help!

All the best!!

Greg

Greg,

I sent you an email in which I concluded that this is a No 6. I see that you've come to the same conclusion. I believe that a VS Model 12E, in very good condition is a $4000 gun, not $900. You did do well at that price, nevertheless.

It appears the $6500 Sarasqueta 12E at Cabelas sold within 2 weeks. Though we don't know what exact price it sold for...the sale hints that the market value of these guns may be more than the book value.

After seeing the Model 6 deal Greg made...I'm watching for more 50's Sarasqueta's.....the quality to price ratio is hard to match. I'd buy a gun like his,for the price he paid,as often as I run into them. Long term, its money in the bank.
