Suddenly find I have to go to Frankfurt for a meeting next week. Any recommendations for non-immediately-fatal-or-disfiguring amusement?

The beer there I believe is 6% alcohol. Don't forget to try the weiner scnitzel, pounded veal. Great.

Buy couple of genuine German beer steins and a fancy smancy cuckoo clock. Too bad the USD is lower then "whale shit."
They also make wonderful wood figurines (like christmas tree ornaments, nutcrackers,....), but those are cheaper at TJ Max then in Germany!
PS. You can get some good Cuban cigars just make sure when you get back you don't declare them at US port of entry forms.

Three recommendations, all referencing beer! Is this a great bunch or what?

I'm trying to remember which beer Frankfurt features and where to drink it...I think a beer garden.

After flying in there a couple of times, all I find I remember is a mix of modern and old architecture and bunches of tourists. Maybe as a result, I don't remember any great German restaurants. Good wines though including some Italian reds we don't see in the states. Really good public transport.

Old notes recommend going out to see Eberbach Abbey.

In Darmstadt, which is practically a burb of Frankfurt, you will find one of Frankonia Jagd's hub stores. If you have never been to one, and have any appreciation of German hunting guns, equipment, and clothing you will find it a very special visit. They will have sales people on the floor who speak English and a huge collection of neat, quality hunting and shooting "stuff", including some of the most magnificant combination guns you have ever seen. As someone noted above, the exchange rate blows, but you will find things there which you will not see in this country.

I believe the local specialty is cider (apfelwein) rather than beer. And, don't forget their local sausage - the Frankfurter.

I was there last year and don't remember a beer that was specific to Frankfurt. IMO Almost any of the local beers are excellent if you can get them on tap. One thing for sure I'd recommend trying is the pork knuckles with dumplings which is a Bavarian specialty There is a really interesting museum about Frankfurt which is in the downtown area right along the river. The diorama in this museum showing the devastation during the war is a sight to behold. One of the amazing things to me while touring Germany is the truly excellent job they have done rebuilding.

Leo,
Sachsenhausen and Apfelweinviertel or "Apple Wine Quarter" are what is left of the old part of the city of Frankfurt am Main. Schweizer Strasse for Beer, wine, Ebbelwoi and Handkase mit Musik, and the high-quality sausages known as frankfurters (Brühwurst). Frankfurt has many museums and some of Germany's best-known.

Road/Rail trip if time permits.

Frankonia Jagd has a very large store about 90 min (115 km) east by train, in the Baroque town of Würzburg. Less in a fast auto but in reality traffic between Frankfurt and Würzburg on the autobahn can sometimes be a PITA .
Wurzburg is a good walking town as it has a significantly large old town situated on the banks of the river Main. There are numerous churches, old bridges across the Main, the Festung (Fortress) Marienberg, the University, Town Hall - all the makings of a great historic city. The history is part and parcel of everyday life. There are local German chocolate stores right next to the Dom St. Kilian, there is a thriving Farmer's Market right in the middle of the Marktplatz beside the Marienkapelle.

Weinhaus Zum Stachel is probably the oldest and best eatery in Würzburg and their wines are from the restaurant's own vineyards. More dining and drinking you say, Ratskeller Würzburg, Backöfele, Wein- und Fischhaus Schiffbäuerin. Good eats.

At this point it would be safe to assume I mangled & misspelt every German name-place.
