Hoping someone can answer this or steer me in the right direction. Just picked up a nice Savage Model 1899 rifle, circa 1951. Pulled the butt plate and found the letters YG following the serial number. Apparently a model designation, but not one I can find in my reference books or online. Thanks in advance. TT

1. Google for 24hourcampfire:Savage Collectors.
2. Get 'The Ninety-Nine A History of the Savage Model 99 Rifle' by Murray.
Found this site to be helpful............
Also must have for any Savage lover: Precision Shooting Magazine October 2007/November 2007 issues: Arthur W. Savage by Robert A. Greenleaf part I and II.

Is the YG stamped with the same size font as the serial number?

My problem lies in reconciling my gross habits with my net income.

All: The word over on 24hourcampfire.com is that the "YG" is an assembly or inspection number, not a model number, and that what I've got is your basic Model 99 EG. Rob, the YG is not the same size as the serial number where stamped on the butt plate, but is on the butt itself. Thanks for steering me over there.

I also removed the forend and found a 1950-range serial number, a couple of thousand lower than the number found elsewhere on the gun. Don't know how uncommon that is, or just how bad it is. It certainly looks like it could have left the factory that way, and it doesn't look replaced or "wrong." Thoughts on that? Thanks again. TT

I would take what you get from 24hourcampfire collectors BBS as "Bible". I have minty 1949 99EG .300Sav. from original owner with vintage dust in the magazine. Sorry matey, but I'm not interested enough in numbers to take mine apart since nothing in it is broken. Theorecially all numbers should match, but you're looking at not "Made in Germany" mass-produced piece, if you know what I mean.
