Even my trio of Nitro Specials suck! One is 80 years old, the next is 83 years old, and the newest was made in the 40's I shimmed the hook of the 80 yr. old 20 ga, now it's as tight as the other two --- which is quite a statement of Ithaca's quality control over what was basically a hardware store gun. I too have seen too many cracked Sterlingworths, have owned a few Elsies that rattled when the forend was removed. I think all of the guys who've owned these guns got their money's worth! Chopperlump

Here is what my NID 12ga done this spring at 40yds the turkey did not seem to notice that the gun was 81 years old, but I also con not speak for the other gun makers but I am sure that many of their guns have done the same.

I should live so long as to shoot an NID, Sterlingworth, Parker or Smith loose with normal home care. We all know that Lefevers never shoot loose, as long as the adjustment screw can be moved. Now I am sure that I can destroy any of them if I abuse them and shoot heavy loads with out any decent care. Shoot the shells they were designed to handle and clean and lube them properly they will last for generations to come.
My gun room has more worn guns than many. All my NIDs are tight. If only these old guns could talk I doubt that they would tell me less than hundreds of thousands of shells have been shot through them collectively and they all still work. The American double was a rugged gun, built to take use and abuse. They last and last far beyond what is reasonable to expect for a gun which most always cost $50.00 or so at the most. Heck of a value if you ask me.

You asked for proof that they could last thousands of rounds and got proof from a person who has a solid track record for stating the facts. You then questioned how anyone could shoot that many rounds and not be a registered shooter. As the ATA and the NSSA are finding out the vast majority of shooters do not shoot registered and will never shoot them. Registered shooters are not on the increase and have been in decline for many years. Most shooters are not out for glory or rewards. It is a hobby for them and they like to shoot and meet fellow shooters.
Exactly. While I never shot a single round of registered trap, it was trap shooting that moved me from rifles to shotguns. For two years I kept the 500ct bags that the wads came in. At the end when I got bored with trap I had shot just over 21,000 rounds. I didn't use an NID but I would have gladly done so if I owned one at the time.

CherryBomb may well have seen 3 loose NID's... we've all seen loose guns of every make. Even $50,000 Hollands and Purdeys can be shot loose, but that doesn't mean "they suck or what". Now if those guns shot loose with 8000 psi loads and proper care, maybe we can conclude they are of poor design, workmanship, and materials. However, the vast majority of NID's and many others do exactly what they were made to do for many decades, and remain tight and quite functional. Put a jet engine in a bi-plane and you may have problems. Do NASCAR engines suck because they need rebuilt after one or two 500 mile races? Geez, my '93 Ford truck had 250,000 mi. on it and was still running strong when I sold it. Should I have offered it to Hendricks Motor Sports as a better vehicle to run in the Daytona 500?

We have all seen worn guns, and no doubt they earned it. The Lefever "H" pictured at the Vintagers shoot in Raton last week, had 1400+ rounds thru it THIS month! When I took it apart to clean it, the bbl lug fell off in my hand. Does that make it a bad gun? Stuck it back in with good epoxy, back at work again by Friday, I hope.
