Anyone have any info on a gunsmith named A. Stein. The city after the name is Alfeld. No seriel numbers. The gun looks German and is a DB rabbit eared 12 ga. fully engraved with gold inlays.

Any info would be appreciated.

Ernie:

Do you have a sign in your yard that reads: "If you have an old hammer gun, stop here"?? Would the "Alfeld" be A. Field? How about any proofmarks before we start to guess in Germany?

Kind Regards,

No I don't have a sign in the yard but it's a thought. I spend a lot of time ( and gas money ) going to estate auctions. I feel like I have made a good start on a collection at reasonable prices, some I sell some I keep.

My knowledge has increased a good bit due to info from all the great guys on this site. I have learned the early gunsmiths always put the name of the city where they made the gun after their name. This gun has A. Stein-Alfeld on the right barrel in gold inlay. No seriel numbers and I can find no proofs. Someone ( I think it might have been researcher ) looked through his book on european gunsmiths for me ( forgot the name of the book )but thought someone might have seen the name or have some info on this name. Even with my lack of knowledge this is by far the most beautiful hammer gun I have ever seen.

Will give some more thought to the sign.

Thanks

Ernie

A start would be in Eugene Herr's "Der Neue Stockel" but I've looked high and low and a copy is not to be found.

Hello Ernie,
Alfeld is a town in Germany, in fact a couple of towns. There is a small town named Alfeld in Bavaria, and a larger town of the same name in Saxony. So yes this should be a German gun. I also checked the man's name, no luck here. A local gunsmith or dealer IMHO.

Thanks Guys- Jani provided the fact that it was made in Germany. It really doesn't make any difference if I don't have any background on the gunsmith, this gun is a keeper and a BP shooter.

Thanks Again

Ernie
