Dig,
A great read, I thoroughly enjoyed it and almost felt as if I was there too. Thank you.

Thanks guys,

Good poem Cadet - why is it we feel more 'odd' about shooting an elephant than a rabbit or a roe? There are lots of reasons linked to intelligence, social structure, longevity etc but there is no denying it -it is a beast that impresses you.

Even the old hunters who shot thousands write about twinges of regret on a personal level - man to elephant as individuals.

A funny business.

Dig,

Very nicely done. Believe it easily merits print in something like The Double Gun Journal. Give Daniel Philippe a call. He'd want a tad more on the gunsmithing, load developing for the Manton and some bird pictures with your hammergun. Only fact checking needed is on the banning of the .450 in India that came to be viewed as banning all .450 cartridges (.577/.450, .500/.450, .450 nitro etc) which is much more complicated and happened later than you suggest. See some posts by JPK or maybe it is 400 Nitro on this board or on http://www.accuratereloading.com.

That was a wonderful story; thanks for sharing it.

Personally, under the circumstances you described, I would have more qualms about shooting a treed mountain lion than an elephant.

Dig,
Given the choice of being in Mike's shoes or your's, for this hunt, I think I would have chosen your's. While I have no objection to elephant hunting, I have no particular desire to pull the trigger on one either. But to be on an elephant hunt, is something I wouldn't pass up. Great job on the article.
