The reason I posted the question about the Simson shotgun is that I have the chance to pick up a nice Simson SxS with excellent 29.5" Krupp bbls choked .045 (XF) and .048 (XF). Is this a well rounded outfit for duck hunting? Or, is the XF x XF choked barrel combination a bit much?
Thank you for any and all info and opinion.

The full chokes may be ideal for you, but remember you won't be able to shoot steel and will be limited to bismuth if you can get it or another of the barrel-friendly lead substitutes, in other words, expensive shells. Some can shoot full and full, but most of us could use a little more latitude.
If the barrel steel is modern, you could have the chokes opened to use steel...Geo

Your ideal chokes will depend on your shooting situation, or situations.
For ducks decoying over decoys open chokes would be best. Skeet (.005") works very good with modern steel loads. A gun choked Skeet 1 and Skeet 2 (LM / .015") would be a good all around combination. If all your shooting is close then chokes of .005/.010 would work. It's hard to comprehend how tight steel will group from a skeet choke until you shoot that 30" circle at 40 yards!
For "pass" shooting or ducks that present shooting at 35 yards or more chokes up to Mod (.020") might be best. Any more choke on steel will blow your pattern.
If your shooting distances varies then Skeet 1 & 2 might be best for you. With those chokes your Simson could also serve as a fine upland gun.

I decoy them in and I prefer skeet.

My best duck gun is improved cylinder and extra full, works well in all weathers.

M/F, but duck hunting with olde doubles might be a thing of the past. Best bet, add 'em to your display of decoys in the family room.

Lowell's right. At $3.00 a shell for lead substitutes, you can't do much duck hunting with an olde double.

When did we stop shooting lead? :-D
Every year I shoot hundreds of crows, dozens for each duck. Best of all; they respond to calling and decoys like ducks, I can shoot lead shot, if using a repeater no plug, I can shoot as many as I want each day, AND I don't have to clean them or try to develop a taste for them.

This past waterfowl season I had one really good day. Used 6 of those USD3,00 factory bismuth shotshells on ducks and 2 on geese. So, 8 shots X USD3,00 = USD24,00. Gas for 180 miles round trip was USD3,40/gal X 9 gal = USD30,60. All other trips this past season had less shooting, maybe average of 3-4 rounds per trip. SO, on a really good day gas is as much or more than shotshells, on bad days, gas is lots more. Most of my 28 gram bismuth reloads cost me USD2,00 or less.
FYI, I only shoot when I think I have good chance of clean kill. Long term average is about 2,0 shotshells per duck or goose bagged, including second finishing shots.
Now and then I hear lots and lots of shooting. Always result of guys with repeaters blasting away with steel loads. Few to very few ducks leave marsh with them. Given price of steel loads, those guys musta spent more for ammo than I did, maybe lots more.
