Oil, anything else is garish to me. I also like the way it feels. Last year, I built a guitar(nothing complicated) I finished the neck in pure tung oil I will use nothing else from now on. I have only done one stock with it but I like it. Does it protect as well as something really tacky like a heavy lacquer. Hell, it never rains here anyway!

I prefer a satin finish thats sort of in between having somewhat of a sheen and being a tad on the dull side, not making much sense??....Even more so than sheen, I prefer stains that bring out the maximum amount of figure in a given blank...some blanks might require minimal amounts of stain...too much stain or the improper color of stain would/could hide some of the gorgeous natural colors (the oranges, yellows, caramels, etc) that are found in some blanks...

This example is just about right, right amount of sheen and the stain brings out all the stocks natural colors... in my opinion..

Poly for hard working guns, True Oil is fine for a gun that only shoots a few boxes a year.
