I have a Simson 16 ga sxs, pictured below. What was the original finish on the receiver? I do not believe that it was case colors, Any ideas? I really like the gun and want to restore it some after hunting season, reblueing the barrels, refinishing the stock but need to know what to do about the receiver. Thanks in advance. Chris,
I have a Simson 12ga that looks very similar if not exactly the same as yours. It is has color case on the receiver.
Hope this helps.

I was just looking at two high grade Simsons on friday, a 16 & a 20, in the 26xxx-28xxx range. Both were origianly case colored.
Beautiful guns.

Grey silver finish only on deeply engraved Simson's made in GDR. Known as model 76 with sideplates and mod.74 without sideplates. All actions that look like yours got case colors. Maybe there were grey finish plain engraved Simson, but personally I didn't see one. BTW, you could check it yourself. If c.c. were deleted by previous owner or dealer there are must be c.c. traces inside the receiver. Take action and stock apart and look inside.

I, too, think it depends on vintage and where it was headed from the factory. But I'll bet it was cased colored. I have several Simsons, dating to the 20s. One was blacked, others all CC'd.

Upon close examination there is still some case color around the edges, close to the wood. Is having it re-colored an expensive or big deal? I went 6 in a row on chukars on Sunday - 2 doubles and 2 singles so I like the gun alot - Don't want to be polishing a road apple but reblued it would look cool, so I am trying to figure out what to do with the receiver. Thaks for the input. Chris

Chris, thought I'd share these two for your reference. They both have CC traces; one is '77 and the other '68 vintage. They are both 12b and one is scoped, with claw mounts (SEM). Great guns, very well made and (at least for me) very comfortable to shoot. JC(AL)

In my opinion, leave the receiver as it is. Have the barrels reblacked if you need to. It sounds like it's a using gun and you don't want to be candy assing it all day. Re-case coloring is expensive because every moving thing has to be taken out of the receiver and forend. There are no guarantees it will work as well, if at all when it comes back. Sometimes things warp. Those guns were meant to be used.

I think I'll leave the receiver as is and just reblue the barrels and maybe refinish the stock. Thaks for the advice.
