This is the double that means the most to me. It was passed down by my grandfather. Originally it came with damascus barrels. Back in the early 70s he wanted smokeless barrels for it. So he sent it out to NY to Lefever (I think) There it was refitted with steel barrels. The rib was cut out and new barrels
installed. It's a 16ga.

If I remember right it was expensize for the times. Somewhere between 4 and 500. This was his pride and joy. Nowhere as light as a Parker but not too bad.

From what I can tell the craftsmanship is very good. Fit and finish is very nice. I know it isn't worth much but that doesn't matter to me. This one is a keeper.

Lovely Remington Model 1894, probably A. I really like the Remingtons, especially the 1894s, as they were well built, quality doubles. What did you do w/ the Damascus tubes?

Kind Regards,

I still have them. My grandfather wasn't the type to ever throw anything away. Must have had something to do with growing up during the depression.

I have to admit I did think about having them flattened out and made into a few knife blades

When new the Remmingtom models 1894 & 1900 were priced in the same range as Parkers and other American first quality doubles. In my opinion the side-by-sides from Ilion, New York are in no way inferior to their Connecticut cousins.

As I understand it the model 1894 and 1900 shotguns with Damascus barrels were originally proof tested with smokeless powder. Thus if in good condition they might be safe to shoot with modern low pressure loads.

Please don't do that. If your Damascus barrels are in anywhere like the condition of your receiver you have a very fine two barrel set. I believe that your replacement barrels could have been done by Remington. Are they numbered to the gun? What if anything appears on the top rib?

Best Regards, George

Hi George, the damascus tubes are just that. Only tubes, no rib oe locking mechanism. The damascus tubes were cut off and replaced with the steel tubes. I'll dig them out later on and take a picture.

It appears that the gun was sleeved. A faint parting line appears in the top picture about 3/4" forward of the rib parting line.

I read that the late Edmund Osthaus- one of the best Sporting Dog painters of his era- was also an avid quail hunter- and had at least 2 high grade Remington double guns- wonder where they are today??
