I have shipped guns to myself from MA to Florida. I take them to the UPS main facility and never had a problem. Tried to ship from FL to MA and was told by the main office of UPS - NO - can only ship to an FFL. What is the rule and can I ship to myself via UPS or Fedex? Thanks

Why use UPS,go to the USPS they will ship it for you as long as its a long gun (if you have a FFL they will ship handguns too). At UPS you have to play "counterman roulette" and they can win even if they are wrong (and they are you can ship to yourself by law) but they can make their own rules up .The USPS can't.

you're not necessarily running afoul fo federal regulations. last time i tried to ship a firearm with UPS here was several yrs ago now. i had copies of the regs printed out. argued for 15 minutes w/ the UPS clerk before finally his light bulb came on: "OH! i'm not arguing about the LAW! these are our POLICIES!" and their policy was to accept firearms from non-ffl holders to ONLY go to the original manufacturer. more than likely, you're having to deal with a local UPS directors policy. nothing to do w/ federal regs.
for all the badmouthing the USPS gets, i've had abt 800 ebay packages and another 30-40 gunbroker, a fair percentage of those being firearms, and i could not ask for better service than i've had from the US Postal service.

As Roy said, yes. (B9) May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity? [Back]
Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.
That's the easy part. There's no guarantee that you won't encounter a dim-witted, uninformed clerk at UPS, FedEx or USPS, who will argue with you. But, so far as the Feds are concerned it is quite legal. It is your gun, will still be your gun after you arrive in the other state. No transfer of ownership is involved. Good luck.

Yes you can, but if you are going to do it I'd stick with the Post Office. Most UPS and FedEX people won't let you do it...

OK, so much for the good ole USA. What if I want to ship my shotgun to myself in care of my buddy in Saskatchewan so it'll be there when I arrive for ducks in the Fall. I have a Canadian non-resident P.A.L. and the gun in question is registered to me in Canada.
Can I do it???...Geo

George, the answer is technically "yes."
However, I believe the Canadian law is that one cannot ship firearms to a Canadian addressee from outside Canada.
One cannot bring a firearm into Canada without a Non-resident Firearms Declaration. This is part of how Canadian Customs works to insure that you are bringing in a personal gun for personal use while in Canada. These have to be declared and cleared at Customs.
Fairly routinely, UPS and similar carriers seem to have firearms accessories rejected and sent back instead of delivered in Canada.
Sometimes, items shipped via USPS with the proper documentation do manage to get through but need not. It's up to the personnel in Customs...

Thanks, Montana; I wasn't dumb enough to try it anyhow. As for the nonres.firearm decl., they don't seem to ask for that document when I bring my shotgun in with me so long as I have the PAL and the registration document. I don't guess they'd have any way of knowing whether I had that stuff or not if I just mailed the gun to myself...Geo
