I have a guy with an A.H. Fox/Sterlingworth and wants to do a trade for it. It is a 12ga.,30"bbl, full/mod. Good conditon, shinny bores, and locks up tight as vault ( his description ) I need to know what questions to ask him about it `cause i`m not to savy on this make of double. The trade offer he wants is for a firearm worth about $550.00 which makes me wonder why he would let it go cheap unless that`s all it`s worth. I`ve seen these double go for a lot more and it`s raised an eyebrow. I have a St. Etienne that needs reloading and wanted something that shoots modern ammo. Will the Fox handle that ?

Could be all it is worth or it could be worth double. Condition has a lot to do with the value. Is it an ejector or extractor gun? Does it weigh 7# or 9#? Not that either is good or bad but it may not fit your needs one way or the other. There are a lot of other things to ask and I am sure you will get more advice from others. Be careful before you make a deal.

A 12-gauge Sterlingworth with 30-inch barrels is far and away the most common Ansley H. Fox double. Hence unless in pretty high all original condition is not all that valuable. There are a lot of 30-inch 12-gauge Sterlingworth doubles out there that are not worth $550 in spite of what some dealers may be asking.

Burch: The last three 12 gauge 30 inch bbl. Sterlingworths that I have sold brough $1,100.00, $1,150.00 & $1,750.00 & ranged from "good" to "excellant" condition. I would say at $550.00 if the bores are good, the barrels ring true & it locks up tight (I have never had a SW that didn't) MAKE THE TRADE!
Best Regards, George

I gave 1K for one and I gave 250$ for the other that I have.
They are my favourite American double.

Boy, I don't know of too many Sterlingworths that aren't worth $550! A basket case one (admittedly, a 16 with ejectors) just brought $1300 and change on Gunbroker!

Big difference between what any small-bore Fox will bring and what a ratty 30-inch 12-gauge Sterlingworth is worth.

Junk is junk no matter what the bore. If it ain't junk it's worth $550.00

550 for a fox...not many fox guns are "junk" unless totally abused by the owners. If gun is in good condition i would do it, and i dont care for 12 bores. I will deal with him!
