What is the best adhesive for gluing a steel shim into the hook? I think there was a discussion about it a few weeks ago but can't find it. Thanks!

Loctite "Black Max" was recommended on this site previously. I used some to glue a steel shim on a hook and it's still firmly attached. Bill

that's all I use- had one come loose. I now punch small holes through the shim to give the black max somewhere to go. After it has set I then clean up any excess. Also, I usually try first for fit then go .001 smaller because the glue will take up about that much. paul

Michael, not having your experience, soldering scares me and I'll stick to the black max. paul

Yup, soldering is black magic to some of us, even though we soldered in a previous life. However, mysterious as solder and heat are to most of us, cutting a dovetail in a lump would be similar to carving a Ferarri engine out of a block of steel. Let's hear it for the glue.

Amen, Eightbore. Why make invasive and difficult what is a simple and satisfactory remedy. Mike Orlen has it right: 60/40 solder. I've done it a couple times and it's very simple. My hobby of making handmade knives has taught me the art of soldering. If soldering is too much for you, try the Blackmax glue. If you want to screw up, get some needle files and start cutting a dovetail in the hook. Every stroke of the file makes the integrity of the hook less than it was. Chopperlump
