Daryl,
I can make you a new handle, I just need to know the proper shape and dimensions.

I would try it first as a corkscrew.

I like darnation's idea. But w/ Geno astute observation, if anyone has a copy of No. 31, Fall 2006, German Gun Collector's Journal, on page 22 & 23 is a cased J. Sackreuter-M. Mach pinfire w/ accessories w/ handles. Is the tool old enough to be used w/ pinfire cartridges?

Kind Regards,

That is essentially the type of tools pictured in the link I gave. It probably is early enough with all that wood.

Darnation, I did try it as a corkscrew last night on an Alsace wine. It worked ok, but not fast enough for me and my company. Maybe with the new handle Chris volunteered to make it will be "quicker". I don't know the time period of this item, but it "seems" quite early.

I have a Birmingham-made single barrel percussion fowler with a shorter screw protected by a similar flat-headed threaded cap at the lower end of the ramrod. The wooden rod is sub-bore diameter (about 5/16") with a flared iron tip on the top end. I have always assumed the screw was a wad puller, as described by others.
