Good stuff. Having just learned a great deal about Russian politics in one of my classes, this is especially interesting. Your comments on Putin are especially interesting. His high approval rating despite some of his actions is incredible.
A question on hunting. My uncle went hunting in Kamatchka for bears. If you wanted to do this, how would it have to be done? Is it a tag or permit system? Thanks.

Humpty, carefull what you say on the internet. Putin's control is magnified by crushing all opposition. I had high hopes for the Russian people and Russia when he was elected but it didn't happen. Maybe some of the oil wealth will help the common people. There is absolutely no reason why these people cannot have the same standard of living as the US or western Europe. Politics and corruption ruins that hope. My wife read today that in Moscow the banks no longer change dollars to rubles because of the dropping value of the dollar. I enjoy reading humpty dumpty's and Geno's posts. Especially when it concerns gun and hunting experiences in former USSR nations. My wife is from Vitebsk,Belarus. Not to far south of you Geno. I had a nice trip there 4 years ago. I hope to return sometime but with the dollar falling it may not happen to soon. If I get the chance to visit St Petersburg I'll have to visit you.

I also find this fascinating. Since the Soviets were always at the forefront of marksmanship competition, how did young people get funneled into the sport and how did they acquire the guns and ammo?

H-D probably used too strong words describing modern situation over here and some members made some sh*t in pants as I can see. It's not Belarus over here and everyone can speak any he wants. But if you call Putin as an idiot in mass media, probably you will get to the court first of all to give explanation why you called him this way. I was in many countries around the world and today there is no less democracy, than in the rest democratic world. For instance you can't send some hunting related item by post to Russia today, US customs will stop it, but I can send the same to US. You don't feel it, but your rights are limited today. So it's big question where is more freedom in this world today. Tommorow there is presidental elections over here and I'm going to go over there to give my voice to no one, because I don't like they think Medvedev is allready President. I don't see any real opponent to him, because of Putin wrong internal policy.

It's less than 20 years since the Wall came down, and Russia isn't doing badly. Rights and freedom have come a long way. Russia is criticized for wild markets, racketeering and oligarchs but we've got lots of that here. Putin has provided a sense of pride. Russia needs to establish rule of law, strengthen its courts and jurisprudence, to become a modern economic superpower.

O.K., Geno's right, it's not so bad really. As I've said, times better than any given moment of the communist period. Indivudual freedom of speech is not hampered in any way. I' for one man, am not afraid to voice my opinion online or offline. True, some "opposition leaders" have been shut up and locked up - but those "leaders" are, really, racist punks who belong behind bars, if not a mental institution. But when you switch on your TV, you're likely to see a lot of tasteless hypocricity. Like those elections, which would be the first ones I'll ignore. Everybody knows they don't decide anything - yet all the media try to picture it as the life-or-death battled. But, well, "independent media" is an oxymoron anyway.
Speaking of elections - I, and anyone else, can predict the results now. Here I go now, about 4 hours before the end of voting time: I gve Medvedev a comfortable, but not absolute, lead of 60, maybe 65 per cent. (90 or 99%, like Kazakhstan or Bielorussia, would be simply ridiculous, unnatural-like) Zyuganov and Zhirinnovsky would tie for the second place with about 15 % each. The rest, between 5 and 10, %, goes to Bogdanov.
The results of he elections are settled, but the voters were screwed up not at the poll booths, it's going to be honest enough in there. It's just that the opposition leaders, and I mean real leaders, the ones who shell the cash for campaigns, backed off before it was time to name their champions. Why they backed off? I don't know. But they did. Medvedev's "competition" is nothing but a clumsy imitation. They wouldn't even win against each other. So... Thats about it.
But the truth is that a majority of Russians are now living much better, than they ever did.

Geno, what's the result? 70% for Medvedev? And who is the next Prime Minister? I don't see any real opponent to him, because of Putin wrong internal policy.
According to the outcome, don't you think this is a "right" internal policy as far as Putin is concerned? JC

70% Medvedev and the next Prime Minister is Putin according to agreement between them. By our Constitusion President got a lot of rights and I expect new policy in the nearest future. Medvedev in complitely new man in Russian pocitical structure. He's not commie and he's not KGB officer, he likes rock music btw, he looks like man who knows what real democracy is and I believe hes gonna build 2 parties system in Russia. Anyway I didn't vote for him, because I don't like this Putin-Medvedev agreement. It smells bad.

StormsGSP, bear hunting in Kamtchatka - piece of cake. I can save a lot of money if I know outfitters over there, who can get the bear shooting licence right over there. Depending on bear size prices starts from ~$1000.00 Otherwise I have to order this hunting through agency and it will be pricey in this case.
