I'm helping a friend work on the stock finish of his Fulton that his father-in-law put a Jotsom slip on recoil pad on 30 plus years ago. We now have a 2 tone finish. Anybody have any tricks to evening out the color. Also does anyone have a source for checkering cutters for the flat top checkering used on these and Lefever Nitro Specials stocks and forends. Any info will be appreciated

S.I.T. i would use a Dembart fine cut single line cutter if you want to point up the diamonds. You could try some spirit stain and try to match up the colors on the stock. It will penetrate through some finishes to darken. Brownells sell both products. Bobby

LC Smith used shellac on their guns in the form of French polish. If you have a cabnet maker in the area see if he will put a coat or more of garnet shellac on the stock. I use a bent file from Brownells to recut checkering, if you point it up it will be wrong. The tops of those guns were flat to save money. bill

Bill, Did LCs have shellac/French polish by the Hunter Arms period? My field LC from the Hunter period appears to be a surface coated as opposed to "in the wood". Also, my Fulton appears surface coated as well. Both, I believe are orig finish.
