Got this new post mixed up with a previous one on wads. Sorry

I will be reloading 16 gauge for use in an early Ithaca SxS. Roll crimp looks like the way I'll handle the bow end of the project. What are the options for tools that give good roll crimps? The only one I've found so far is the drillpress gimmick from Ballistic Products. Does this work well? If not, what is a better choice?

Thanks for you input.

The BP roll crimper works fine. I run mine at a fairly slow speed. The old hand crimpers also work well but I can't say any better--and 16 gauge hand crimpers are scarce.

gh16mhill, The Ballistics Products roll crimper is a good tool. I use it for both 16 ga and 20 ga. short shells. I use a drill press and I think the speed is 430 rpm, works fine I just didn't change the speed. Some shells roll crimp very nice, Cheddite 16 ga 2 1/2" roll very nice. I have cut some Federal and Winchester to 2 1/2" and roll crimped them, the Federals aren't bad.
I buy the Cheddites in 2 1/2", the same for 20 ga in short chamber L.C.s
I would make sure that your gun is 2 1/2" chamber. I can almost guarantee that your Ithaca is 2 9/16" chamber.

JDW I suppose the Ithaca has short chambers, though I measured them at slightly longer than 2-5/8". In any event, I plan on loading light shot loads (3/4 and 7/8 ounce) in short shells. In fact I was going to buy Cheddites if that is the best way to go.
Based on your remarks, this looks like a good bet.

In another post earlier today I was hoping to learn of experience with old-time wads (nitro card and Alcan Feltan) in plastic hulls. I have a bundle of such wads on hand and might as well use them up. Have you ever used traditional wads in the Cheddite hulls? Will they work okay? I'm not into mass production, and therefore don't mind experimenting to get the correct wad column.

I haven't tried any of the older componants in Cheddites or any hulls. I only know that similar hulls in changing componants can build up more pressure than wanted and now not be low pressure.
The best thing for any 16 ga shooter/reloadeer is to join the 16 ga. Society and the 16 ga Reloaders Group, there are more reloads in there than you could possibly ever shoot.

I believe it is $40 or $45 for both, a one time fee. Money well spent and a lot of help from everyone there.

Gh, if you do join the "16" society be aware that antagonizing some of the "experts"
there will have you chased away. And never mention Mr. Sherman Bell's Finding Out
for Myself articles that are considered by some as anathema.
The reloading data is surely there, but...
