Well I want opinions from the experts on this gun and thus my post here. My buddy owns this gun and he and I have been discussing it for sometime now. He has a Cody letter on the gun, but it’s one of those letters that only state the basic info, etc…

This gun is a 20g L.C. Smith Skeet Special. As you can see it does not carry the standard engraving one typically sees on these grade guns.

We both have said it very well could be a nice aftermarket upgrade, but then again, anything was possible with Hunter Arms and thus could it be a factory upgrade? I am not one with enough experience in this matter to say either way…so I will defer to the resident experts here.

Sorry for so many pictures but I wanted to document all I could to enable the experts to see as best they could the engraving style in hopes they can offer some thoughts on the gun. If anyone can share any info or thoughts we would appreciate it. Notice the name in the inlaid shield in the stock. Anyone ever heard of him?

the gun looks redone to me ...you can see light pitting on the barrel rib that look blued over, the barrel ledgers look kind of washed out...and the inlays look very 1950/60s ish....just my opinion

I could be very wrong but the engraving doesn't look to be the quality LC Smith might commission on a custom piece. There is very little shading in the scrolls and the extensive use of stipling isn't quality work. Further, the pattern of scrolls is in conflict with the use of oak leaves and acorns on adjacent surfaces. The protruding gold inlays are another indication the engraver was not yet adequately skilled.

I think Hunter would only change the engraving on their top models, and then only if it was in good taste. However their taste may have been different than mine.. I'd give a dollar to a donut that it's after market and very poorly done.. MDC

I agree with MD "after market and very poorly done." If you want to see some really fine LC Smith factory engraving, look over the March offerings from James Julia. Breathtaking!!

I agree with the gentlemen above, this is aftermarket and it devalues a rare 20 gauge Skeet Special. Some folks just can't seem to see a good thing when they have it!

You might want to have your friend backtrack where he got it from and see if he can find out the history of the gun. It shouldn't be that hard if you have the guy's name on the gun. I can't read the last name on the gun. Does it say, OLSON?
