I currently have a RBL28 on order with 30 in barrels choked ic/mod. I will use the gun primarily on plantation quail. I am thinking of changing to sk/ic. All my doubles have 28in barrels and Im wondering if the 30in barrel will be quick pointing. Any thoughts?

When you ordered the gun, weren't you thinking of getting something a little bit different from your other guns?

I like your first choice of chokes, but then I am 68 years old and my reflexes and mount time have slowed from my younger days. In the areas I hunt, quail fly pretty dang guick, and with my slowed reaction time and mount IC and Mod chokes are just about perfect. If you are younger and have a quick reflex time and quick mount, the sk and ic chokes could be better for that style of shooting ONLY. I tend to think the IC and Mod chokes would be a better all around choice, even with quicker reaction times on quail. I don't like to shoot birds real close anyway. Letting them fly another half second prevents blown-up meat.

My opinion - cylinder and cylinder or cylinder and improved cylinder. I don't think the 30" barrels will be a disadvantage. When I change game guns I should go out to the gun club and shoot a few rounds of skeet with the new gun to "re-calibrate" everything.

Best,

Mike

Another $0.02 - Leave em IC and Mod. When you want more open chokes use spreader loads.

That's surely a tough call for any individual on barrel length and chokes. For a quail gun, I'd go with no more than 28" barrels and 26" is no disadvange for me either. Kinda depends more on the MOI (a Rocketman-ism) or something we commonly refer to as swing-weight. Since the 28 RBL is pretty light and quick, 28" might be my choice so it'd be a bit less quick for use on pass shooting dove. I'm not fond of a long gun for my quail hunting up and down steep terrain with brush. I've always preferred a 26" gun for this work. I have enough to do keeping a 26" barrel out of the dirt.

But, ultimately I think it's really dependant on the individual's physique and abilities more than the type of birds being used on.

I would stick with the 30inch barrels because in such a light gun the extra length will smooth the swing - besides the long barrels look really cool in small guages. As for chokes,if "plantation" quail translates pen raised birds I would anticipate mostly shorter range shots and the more open chokes would be my choice. I know with the pen raised Bob Whites we use to train dogs they are not wild flushers and the shots are all well within 30yds. I prefer skeet and modified chokes which work fine for the wild desert quail. And the guns i use for them are set up that way in 28(sold) 20 and 16ga. I can cover everything from 10yds to 50 yds with that combination.

Chuck that picture reminds me of what a Washington State Chukar hunter told me:

"You know how to spot a Chukar hunter? His thighs are 20" across and his brain is the size of a golf ball."

Best,

Mike

Thanks for all the input. I have a couple of 28ga with 28in barrels. Im sort of leaning to the 30in with sk/ic. Where I hunt they pre release birds in August and they tend to flush pretty good. The more I think of it....do I really need another gun?
