I notice it is where the hands have used the gun. Is it anywhere else, like on the middle of the buttstock? If not, it could have been caused by sweat or salt from someone's hands. Or maybe even dye from someone's leather gloves. I would probably try a mild bleach diluted in water to see if you can remove it that way. If it is some type of fungus or mold, the bleech with stop it from going any further. Then if it were me, as someone else mentioned, I would probably leave it that way. It gives the gun "pertini". And it might not look right if you recut the checkering. Good luck.
