I have a sporter stock for a rifle. Its either for a 1888 Mauser or a Mosin Nagant. I dont have the metal for either to tell for sure. Can anyone measure the hole spacing of the two and tell me that? If its the same for both, a front ring width should do it. Any info would be appreciated.

Not exactly "fine" guns but Haenel made some nice sporters on the 88

I've got one of each. The 88 is approximately 9 1/4", the Mosin is approximately 7 1/2". I didn't take them out of the stocks so that's a rough figure.

Doug

PS the Carcano is approximately 7 7/8"

There are also the '92 and '93 (Dutch, Romanian and many commercial) Mannlichers which might look the same since they have basically '88 Commission actions.

One other thing at least specifically with the sporting '88s: the rear trigger guard screw does engage the tang of the action, but the front trigger guard screw does not engage the action body at all. The forward mounting point for the barreled action is a wedge fitted to the underside of the barrel.

Dutch M95 Mannlicher turnbolt is 8 inches betw front and rear guard screws. If I get a chance to dig out my Romanian action sporter, I'll check that also.
BTW, the M88 sporters I own do have the front guard screw engage the action, that includes the ones I wish I still had. The up front barrel wedge being an extra securing point. Perhaps some sporter variations were built were a take-down system was employed that made use of a blind front guard screw.

Steve-

That's a very nice sporter!

In my youth I bought my Gew '88 out of a barrel of old surplus rifles at a Woolco in the mid-'70s. I fired hundreds of rounds through it without a problem (it was modified for the S cartridge). The bolt is mismatched and wears the Turkish crest and my rifle was expertly armory modified to use the stripper clip rather than the en bloc clip.

These rifles were exceptionally well made and the workmanship nearly to commercial standards. The action is as smooth as glass and even in full original battle dress the rifle is surprisingly handy.

I have always suspected that the Gew '88 saw far more use in the trenches of WW 1 than many give it credit. Even though "designed by commission" and overshadowed by the '98 Mauser, this essentially Manlicher action combined with a very potent cartridge was the equal, if not the better of other weapons in use at the time.

For what round is your sporter chambered?

That Haenel '88 is chambered for 8x57J with a typical un-S-deepened groove diameter of about .320". I'd love to find a nice one in 9x57 to go with it - the workmanship on these early sporters is mighty fine!

Brian, didn't mean to hijack your thread, were you able to determine what your mystery sporter stock was?
