This is slightly off topic, but I'm going to Mexico soon on a bird shoot and have been advised I need to bring a "good guy" letter. My local police department says that I should write one up, they'll do a background check, and then sign it for me. My question - does anybody here have an example of a "good guy" letter that has actually worked for you? Thanks in advance.

The outfitter has been awesome, they just don't have an actual letter.

Did you ask if Tom Knapp needs one of these when he goes to Mexico?

A "good guy letter," and a couple of pints of your own frozen blood! With all the problems in Mexico, and the problems we're having with Mexico, it'd be a good idea.

Dessary, it doesn't really matter what the letter says as long as it reports that the background check is clear. If they'll let you write it, knock yourself out with complimentary prose; just be sure to make it say your background check is clear. I've used either the police Chief or the County Sherriff to get good conduct letters in the past; it doesn't matter...Geo

This is the first time I've heard of this requirement, or notion that this is something to have in your hip pocket when hunting in Mexico. Do folks do the same for South America e.g., Argentina? I've been asked to go to both countries and will likely work in a trip in 2008.
Thx,

JMC, it has been required by the trip organizer on every Mex. or S.A. trip I've been on since the 1980's. I don't know for sure what it is needed for, but I suspect it is required to obtain a gun permit, hunting license, or maybe the visa to enter the country...Geo

I was not asked for anything of this sort, for my trip to Mexico with Mike Mason, last August. We did not ask for gun permits, however, we used the ones furnished at the ranch. We also were not charged for hunting licenses. They were not discussed.

Well, Canada thinks I'm a 'good guy' as I passed their computerized background check at 1000 Islands crossing a couple years ago when hunting up there. But man, they grilled us despite our clean records. They were all about DUI convictions... not that we had any, but what the heck does that have to do with hunting? We didn't even bring any Budwieser as we wanted something local
