I picked this up yesterday and have some questions! I've found it was made in 1927. 16 ga Bores are bright and shiney with no pitting, barrels are clean with no dents or bulges. She lock up tight too! I know this was the lower end of the shotgun line made by Ithaca but i've heard they are very servicable guns.

What type of ammo can i use in my new toy? I'm thinking steel shot a no-no? Also the undersides of the barrels are marked 2 and 4....choke info for full and modified? Am i correct in assuming 2 is modified and 4 is full, or is it the other way around?

Gaz we can't see the pictures - without logging into another board. Steel would not be a good idea for that gun.

Gaz96M:

In Walt's Snyder's "The Ithaca Gun Company", 4 designates full choke and 2 would be modified. But I have seen the stamps to be in error with little size of modification. I would get a measurement of the chamber lengths. If 2 3/4" chamber lengths are in order, look to Midway for shotshells for vintage guns by Federal at I believe 5k psi. DO NOT shoot steel thru it. Also, see "The Double Gun & Single Shot Journal" Volume 18, Issue 2(Summer 2007) on page 147 for a nice, informative article on Nitro Specials.

Kind Regards,

Raimey

I was under the impression if the barrels were in good condition that standard target loads were OK. I would think that steel would damage the barrels expecially with those chokes.

Nitro Specials are solid utility grade guns and the chambers no doubt started out 2 9/16" and should be measured. You'll find lots of good information on the 16ga Society site, including appropriate shells for your gun
http://www.16ga.com/forum/
The gun is probably well past a good check and clean. Let us know where you're from and we might be able to recomend a doublegun smith near you.

That looks like a nice starting point to the slippery slope we all fall into here. Best of luck and welcome to the board.
