Had a pretty good day in the field. Me and a few family members walked all day and jumped lots of quail. Coveys ranged in numbers from 15 to 40 plus. Pheasant numbers are down in this part of the state where we were hunting (Northeastern Missouri) and only saw 4 pheasants today. 3 flushed wild ahead of us, one flushed at 10 yards and he came home with us.

Did all my shooting with my plain old L.C. Smith Field Grade 12g 30" tubes, Imp/Full. It did it's job and so did I today (for a change). The pup is a 12 week old pointing lab. She lasted all day and was still eager for more. Showed lots of interest in watching the other dogs work and even had a solo run on her own with one Quail we dropped right in front of her. She loved that. She has the makings of a great dog already.

In case your wondering...the tail feathers on the rooster were plucked out prior to the picture taking session. My cousins wife uses them in home decorations.

He does not have the tail but he does have a nice hairdo.
Nice job.
I will be leaving in the morning at 3AM for my last week-end of the season.

Funny thing Chuck. I was about to ask that same question.

Glad you had a good hunt, but let me interject a note of caution. IMHO, a 12 week pup shouldn't have been on the hunt. Was the dog properly conditioned to avoid gunshyness? A long day in the field for a 12 week pup is had on it's joints. Would hate to see a dog ruined by rushing it. Slow and easy, and you'll have a great friend for many years.

I knew someone would ask about the dog. It's my cousins dog. He has worked every day with the dog and from the get go has no problems with gun fire. He does all his own dog work and never had a problem with his system. I was a bit surprised myself, but at the end of the day, the dog was more eager than the older dogs and did just fine.

Nice quail. Wish they were hardy up here. Our upland game seasons close on the 7th. Nice to have the easy walking on the ice while the dog works the cattails.
