I just bought a new Nikon 18-200mm lens as a gift for my wife. She shoots lots of pics as do I. So, this is sorta part her gift and mine as well.

I'm wondering if any of you have used this lens and what your review on it is.

I know a guy who uses it for almost all of his shooting. I have seen some excellent shots he made with it. I have a lot more class than than that, so of course I shoot Canon!

But seriously, if you are talking about the 18-200 ED, it is a great lens and does things I never knew a lens could do. Canon has what I call an "extreme range" zoom in their L Series, but it is no where near as good as the 18-200 ED. My Kiwi buddy was in the US for a couple of months this Fall and was taking advantage of the exchange rate that swung in his favor. I tried to talk him into buying that lens, but he wound up getting a new tripod and a lot of other things. The ED glass is good, the Nikon VR system works well in the field, and the image quality is good across the entire focal length range.

If I were to have a severe brain injury that made me lose all of my good sense, then I would shoot Nikons and definitely own that lens. Just kidding, if soemhow someone swapped all of my Canon gear for equivalent Nikon gear, I am sure my photos would look exactly the same as they do now. Just a little good natured ribbing!

edited to add: when my reply posted I saw your signature line reads "come over to the dark side." The local buddy with the Nikon mentioned above owns a camera store. When I wa sin there with my Kiwi buddy, he was telling me I should swap all of my Canon gear for Nikon. I told him, " I will NEVER go over to the dark side!"

Marc,
I used to have a younger brother, then he bought a Canon. No longer in the family as both my older brother and I are lifelong Nikon owners. LOL

Little bro has lots of pics on the airliner sites that he took with some really big (expensive) Canon glass. He must have 4-5 of those gray colored lenses laying about. I almost switched at the last camera body because he had so many lenses...then came to my senses.

I'm hoping this lens ends up being reasonably sharp thru it's range and across the entire frame as it's replacing a cheezy Tamron plastic barreled lens of similar range with some probs. I have a 60mm Micro Nikkor for the close work so this is just a general purpose one.

Chuck,

I bought my wife the Nikon D-80 for he birthday last October. I bought it with the 18-135mm lens. She is very happy with it. I did not get the 18-200 because it did not have the vibration reduction. I will get her a 70-300mm (someday) next and that shoud round out the package. I was told that the 70-300 has the vibration reduction also.

Bill,
This one is a VR 2 lense. The 70-300 is available in both VR and non-VR versions. You might also look at the 80-400.

Chuck,

It's truly a "one size fits all" lens. It is a far better lens than you'll expect for an all purpose lens (even given its price). It has become my "walk around" lens of choice for when I want to go light and with one lens.

Distortion performance is good although the autofocus is a bit slow at the far end (it's a varible apeture so at 200mm it's only 5.6). However, not a big drawback. The VR works nicely.

While it is not quite as sharp as the top of the line non-DX lens such as the 70-200 (which, btw, does have VR in its newest form), if only want to have one lens on your camera, this was probably the right choice.

Your wife (and you when you grab it from her) should love it.

I have a 18-200 VR on a D200. It's a great combination! You will be nothing but happy shooting your new lense.

Chuck,

If my wife sees this post and then wants a 400mm lens I'll be sending you the bill. You should never suggest things like that on a public forum.

Merry Christmas
