Booked a classic bison hunt with Lee Hawes outside Dodge City Kansas this past week and carried my old Snider sporter in .577 using BP and a paper-patched 500 grain bullet. A wonderful time out on the plains, with the outcome shown below:

That's Cody (Lee's son) myself and Lee with the spike I got.

Spike, Snider and ctg.

And a good view of the camp. No electricity, no running water, no dang phones or other modern nuisances; just good folks, good food and good times. And a freezer full of meat! Highly recommended.

Very nice!

A friend did a similiar hunt a couple of years ago using his original Sharps .45-70 carbine.

BTW - I need to give you a call, I lost the link to the website to make the brass for my Springer.

Best regards,

Mike

Steve,
First it was Caffer Caffer. Now it's Bison Bison. Is this some sort of grand slam we haven't heard about! Musk ox next? Great buff.
P.S. Mike and Val Heath send their regards.

Actually, I think it's Bos bison but I get tired of trying to keep up with the nomenclaturists.

Any more pictures of that rifle? And is that some sort of tube sight on it or something else?

I think thats the breech block being open that you see there on the middle photo. Way cool rifle and hunt.

Regarding the taxonomy of the American Bison:
The Plains subspecies (as opposed to the Wood Bison) is Bison bison bison. Source: http://www.ultimateungulate.com

A buffalo hunt looks like a lot of fun. Now, which gun to use, or to purchase for the event??

Yup, I guess so. Ditto in Wilson and Reeder 2nd ed. I don't keep track. Hell chipmunks change their genera every other week.

Rifle pix:

It's a typical Snider; the breechblock swings up and open to the right and you extract the cartridge by pulling the block back. The chunky .577 2" case 'ejects' by rolling the rifle over to the right and letting gravity take over. In the picture of the rifle and bison the block is open.
